RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

RE: Stance on Abortion

I actually saw a neat study thing on Through the Wormhole or whatever. Studying when a child becomes conscious and stuff. Like when they're aware of outside stimulants and react to them. What they did is expose a new born to the scent vanilla and acetone and monitored their brain waves. On a new born carried full term they showed positive reactions to the vanilla and a negative reaction to the acetone. However they also studied premature new borns as early as 22 weeks. And at 22 weeks they showed no reaction. So are they conscious?

Another guy, psychologist says a child is not fully conscious until they're self aware. Like, until they try to fit in with the crowd. For this study they put colored paper on his the the parents head but not the child's. Then without the child's knowledge they slipped the paper on their head too. And then showed them in a mirror. Younger children would take the paper off. But older children saw that the psychologist and their parents were wearing the paper too and didn't take it off. In the end they say that a child is not fully conscious until about 5 years old.

I'm a girl ffffeck

Sounds like a bunch of bullshit. I sure as hell was conscious when I was 4, or how the fuck would I have even remembered anything? Consciousness is simply your ability to perceive and feel, not whether you feel social pressures. If somebody was never allowed contact to the outside world they may do the same thing if they were 25.

I think that rape victims, or someone with a medical condition which will cause them to die if they stay pregnant, should not be forced to give birth. I think birth control and adoption are better options than abortion. Even though I kind of think people who get pregnant through consented sex and then later get an abortion are irresponsible, I don't think abortion should be illegal. Even though I said it should not be illegal does not mean I necessarily think it is the best solution in every situation; and even if you made abortion illegal for everyone except rape victims, that would not work because they could just say they were raped even if they were not.

This roughly coincides with my views lately on the subject. Kinda touchy.

Abortion is murder. Plain and simple. Should be illegal except in cases of rape.

Stance on Abortion

Listen, KFC, that won't work. Why? Because people will lie to get one. Besides no one, should be able to stop a person from having one at their choosing. There should be the choice. While I don't agree with abortion, It should still be there. Besides KFC, you are male IIRC, meaning that I think males should have less of a say on Women health care than Women themselves. Why? Because men and women are biologically different in many ways. Therefore Men should have less of a say in cases like this because, WE AREN'T THE ONES CARING THE CHILD, we are not the ones that carry around the baby for 9 months, they are. However if you are a female I apologize on that part. Also my one main problem with people who say that is this, Who are we to say that someone else can't get an abortion? If you don't like it then here's something amazing: DON'T GET ONE. Whether you like it or not people are going to want them, and unless you want to return to the days where women die because they want an abortion then you have a bit of a problem. If you don't like abortions due to your morals, don't force your beliefs or morals on other people, and simply don't get one.

Also Abortion can not become illegal based on the case of Roe V Wade, at least in the US.

RE: Stance on Abortion

(06-28-2013 09:15 AM)Night Wrote:  I think by now everyone should know by now that abortion is a big issue with me and I'm very pro-choice. And basically the way I see it is that if you force a woman to have a child she either can't afford, doesn't want, can't take care of, or isn't ready in anyway and you force a woman to have the child you are heartless and disgusting.

Actually let's put it in the child's terms. Since I'm sure that more convincing to the pseudo pro "life" individuals. If you force a child to be born into poverty. To be born to parents who didn't want them and very well could abuse them. To be born addicted to a substance they don't even know exists yet. You are disgusting and heartless. Oh and not to mention the unnecessary stress force upon a woman in these horrible situations when they're forced to have a child is bad. Because last time I checked, stress is bad for the fetus.

Oh and then there's the fact that whether abortion is illegal or not women are going to go to extremes to terminate their unwanted pregnancy. Whether that be trying to induce a miscarriage or going to a shady "doctor" and having an unsafe procedure done. Oh but then you say "well just legalize everything if it won't stop anyone." Well there's this funny thing about laws. Laws are put in place to protect people. Before Roe V Wade 5,000 women died from illegal abortions a year. 219 women die everyday from illegal abortions worldwide. Today, in the united states, getting an abortion is safer than carrying a pregnancy to term and safer than an injection of penicillin.

And now for the "well why not just adopt" argument. Yeah. Tell that to the thousands of children waiting to be adopted. Tell that to the 20,000 children who age out of the foster care system every year who never get adopted. Tell them that adoption works. In case you don't know a child needs stability. And being bounced around from foster home to foster home is not stability. Not to mention the foster care horror stories I've heard from people I have actually met where foster parents neglect them and abuse them. How many foster parents are only in it for the money? So yeah. Tell those kids that adoption works.

Quote:It's not the fetus's fault that you didn't use a condom or birth control.

Birth control fails. Condoms break or fall off. some guys are even crazy enough to poke holes in the condom. Some people poke holes in condoms as a "harmless prank" Don't assume things. It makes you look like an ass.

Quote:And even if it is a rape case, I still don't think abortion is right- I mean no it's not fair to the girl but I think killing off the fetus is a bit extreme when there are other options like adoption.

Now that's just disturbing. I assume you're a man. And I also assume if you are a woman you've never been raped. Rape is a traumatic experience. An experience that causes things like PTSD. Depression. maybe even suicide. And you think it's ok for a woman to live for 9 months with that memory almost literally strapped onto her? You think it's ok for the woman to relive that moment every time she runs to the toilet in the morning. You think it's alright for that woman to have flashbacks every time she feels a kick? You think that's alright? Refer to my above argument on why abortion is not another option.

So there's my stance on abortion. It's not just some my body my choice feminist cunt shit. And it definitely won't fit on a bumper sticker. At least, not a bumper sticker you could read from the comfort of your own car driving behind me on the highway.

Good..no great points. You'd think the fact that the mother doesn't want the child would be enough to make someone realize that it is most likely going to grow up in an abusive, neglectful environment. And excusing that kind of pain as being better than not being born at all is just disturbing. Even if I'm taking a 'life' (which does not have any awareness, btw) wouldn't I be saving it from the pain of being unwanted, unloved, or abused?? And, you summed up my views on the rape-abortion issue pretty well too. Power to you.

True. But it can be proven if the cops catch the rapist and can be put into practice using ID. That isn't the best option either because not every rapist is caught.

1) That response was a month ago.
2) Why should you be able to force your morals upon other people, just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean that everyone should be forced to comply with your view.

Quote:Robert D. Kaplan said it best when he stated that a mentality that is truly "pro-life" values the quality of life over the quantity of it. Fuck yeah. If you're truly pro-life, you will want to make sure that everyone who is actually ALIVE, i.e. on this earth, has the best life they can possibly have, and stop being so fucking obsessed with the whole bullshit thing about preserving every "precious" embryo and zygote. Shit, it ain't all that precious, and God sure as hell isn't so limited as to not want every single one of his creations to actually be WANTED and CRAVED for. God is all-powerful. God will know when a fetus is wanted or not and will deliver a soul to one who's actually wanted.

And on a non-religious level -- you know when a "fetus" becomes a "baby"? When the woman DECIDES it.
