RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

1968 documentary about high school
I've recently been delving in to documentaries directed by David Wiseman and came across his documentary titled High School in the process. It was banned in Philadelphia after being released because people believed that it depicted the students as being oppressed. I believe it actually gave a brief impartial view at the lives of students at the school during the time period and it's worth a look. There are points in the documentary where adults are waving their authority around just because they can. For example, there's a scene where a student has a medical reason for not participating in gym, but the student is told that he still has to dress out and participate. Then he agrees to dress out and show up to gym class and he is spontaneously told by the administrator that he's suspended.
It's a little difficult to find, but it's included in this torrent along with many of the other Wiseman documentaries.

There's literally no commentary from the filmmaker at all. The reason that the students appear oppressed is because the adults working at the school oppress them. That commentary wasn't necessary makes it a more powerful documentary imo. It appears to be Wiseman's style to just film and show what happens instead of adding his own input.

sounds interesting. I'll probably get to downloading it then putting it onto my phone(due to space restraints on my laptop). Plus, I can watch it with more flexibility that way.
I'll also look into the other documentaries on that list, see if I'll watch those as well.

I guess it's a little ironic that they attempted to suppress the movie because it showed oppression.

"Students aren't being oppressed and to prove this, we will suppress the documentary talking about this nonsense oppression!"

RE: 1968 documentary about high school
If anyone enjoyed Public Housing you should check out a documentary called "The Pruitt-Igoe Myth". You can find it on Netflix. I really liked it, it's got narration, unlike Wiseman's but it's a good film nonetheless.
