RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Im sick and tired of everything?

I have to wake up struggling to be wild awake because of fricken school each and every single wasted day of my life. I sick of being judged by teachers being told what i am or not good enough for. Im suppose to consider what is best for me not crappy test results or teachers crappy judgement.

Summer is in 9 days and each and every day has been miserable for me because school is ruining everything. A teacher is lowering every grade for everyone when only a few did something wrong. I just want school to come to a crashing end because im sick of hearing about grades or the lies about college when it is really a scam. Most importantly i am sick and tired of being compared to other students because of my grades and test scores.

School sucks who ever created it is crap,
every day i come to school it's like im trapped.

RE: Im sick and tired of everything?

The end of the year can be a very negative and stressful time for teachers. Often, they're just days away from losing their job or getting some kind of abysmal job assignment. They also have to get lots of stupid and meaningless paperwork squared away. And on top of that the students get more and more wild and the school feels like a pressure cooker. It shouldn't affect how the teacher behaves toward the students but it often does.

My advice: Just keep your head down and put it in cruise control until the break. It'll come.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Im sick and tired of everything?

My school ends this week for my class, and things have gotten somewhat worse, grade-wise. Our class has fewer students actually arriving to school frequently(I'm guilty of that as of this post, sitting at home relaxing while school goes on. Good thing I saved up my unexcused absences). We also don't really stay in our classes, and the teachers don't care much for it. I find it advantageous that our class has such great relations with our teachers, so they're pretty friendly with us(but the admins are another story). Unfortunately, all our grades have plummeted due to insistence by admins upon teachers to hand out random assignments and increased testing for the graduating class, which are obviously not done.

So as with what Cancer said, just lay low and stay calm till the break starts.

Im sick and tired of everything?

G1996, I can relate. Sure, just get through it to the end, but the points you make are real. Why should people have to waste so much time for something they believe to be a scam?

If you want to get a quick summary of the history of education, here's a 12 minute video from Khan Academy:

Watch on YouTube

That's a pretty simply history, but it gives you a rough idea of where factory-model schools came from and how things are changing. Crazy that school doesn't even teach people about its own origins.

What do you like to learn and do outside of school? Do you have any idea about what you want to do for work in the future?

These days, a lot of college courses are available on YouTube, http://coursera.org and other sides if you want to explore learning outside the prison. Why do people have to waste so much time suffering just in order to get access to what you can already find (at least in part) on the Internet?

Here's a whole course (lecture series) on justice from Michael Sandel of Harvard:

http://www.justiceharvard.org/

Maybe one day people will apply some of those ideas from philosophers to discussing why education can't change to actually benefit students in their quest to learn about life and figure out what they want to do with it.

RE: Im sick and tired of everything?

At least you aren't far from the end of the school year. You should wait it, like TC and brainiac said.

Perhaps you could do something while you're in the classroom to pass the time and give yourself a little freedom (if you're not already doing this)? I know that what you can do is quite limited, but you could read, draw, write, dream, etc. Just find a way to let your mind escape the prison.

I often forget about the existence of the thanks button on these forums...
