RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Study hard, get good grades, and find a good job.
Why does everybody believe that this is the only way to success? Frankly, I don't believe in the standard dogma - "study hard and get good grades so I can find a nine-to-five job" for the rest of my life until retirement.

I believe in it.
The thing is, it's fucking boring, who would want that?

If they do, I hope I'm one of the cool people with fun jobs. I'd like to throw one into the Grand Canyon.

I experienced cubicle slavery first-hand a few years ago. I worked as a programmer at my dad's company for a part-time summer job. The only fun part of it was when I was personalizing my cubicle.

Re: Study hard, get good grades, and find a good job.
Man I hate people who think like that. Some faggot told me the other day that he's going to get lots of girls once he finishes uni and becomes an engineer and earns lots of money. Lmao what a faggot, there's heaps of jobs that will give you more cash that doesn't require uni. I know that an electrician can be paid more than an engineer(at least where I live).
There's heaps of jobs and careers out there that are "well paying", I really hate the whole "get good grades then finish uni then get a well paying job then be happy" bullshit. Sounds so depressing and unoriginal anyway. Even a security guard could get more pay than a graduate. You just have to keep your eyes open and keep learning about the different options out there.
On another forum this guy got a job driving around sex workers and got paid at least a few thousand dollars a week, and he was just a security guard/driver.

Whoa, really? I want that job! I don't care if I"m female; getting paid thousands a week to drive people of questionable character sounds interesting and fun.
From what I've heard, uni and extra schooling is only good for medicine and law. People really do need the extra schooling if they're going to be doing something like saving lives.
The conventional wisdom of going to college=instant success has always bothered me as well. Particularly because right after high school, at the age of 18, I'm supposed to suddenly know what I want to do with the rest of my life. 12 years of wasted time not doing anything to develop interests, and I'm supposed to know what I'll specialize in? I know, college is supposed to be that "learning experience of finding yourself," but is there a less expensive way? The only way I'd be willing to invest $40,000 a year is if I were sure I wanted to go into medicine, but I'm not so sure right now. I'm also thinking about online business, and I'm already getting some exprience right now, as a high school student, with SBI.

Whoever it was, the link had some kind of affiliate number thing in it, so he/she/it was trying to get sales of the book. Here. By saying that.

I'd just like to mention, that someone with such good grades wouldn't use such bad spelling or grammar, and would probably have a better way of making money than spamming websites without actually reading anything on them. Someone is a little silly.

Passing English does not necessarily mean being any good at it. XD
