RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Call me Chanku. I have a fire which, I have to hide to get by at school. If I showed it, it'd be Expelled by now most likely. I happen to get into debates a lot, mainly with a teacher who is okay, but has opposing views, like backing the NCLB, and the State Standardized tests along with it. I've known about this site for a while, but decided to join. I feel that the school system itself needs reform, it is going to fail the students, and it has begun to. I will fiercely fight for my beliefs and justice. I will dispute facts until proven wrong, or otherwise. I would rather die than give up my beliefs. However if I didn't mask my fire, then I would be a 'target' for other students, for the administrators to call me a 'Trouble Child', and things like that. So in Summary, I'm just another face in the crowd.

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Burn their homes, Sow their fields, Crush their hearts and Feast on their souls!

Hello. Perhaps in the future, you shall rid of the chains and anchors you refer to as "masking" and use those flames to produce the power to progress.

That brief paragraph sums up the problem so well. Welcome to School Survival. I come and go, but lately I'm back. I really think the time has come to change how education works.

Are you familiar with Nikhil Goyal, and Ken Robinson?

Here's one of Nikhil's TEDx talks (he has others, too):

Watch on YouTube

And Ken Robinson has many talks as well... here's one of them:

(He hopes with a stab at NCLB, "because it's leaving millions of children behind.")

Here's a more positive approach to school, Big Picture Schools:

A Simple Ed Reform Solution - Connect School Life to Real Life

How leaving traditional school saved a life

And here's a talk from the founder of Big Picture Schools:

There's lots more to look at if you want to dig through more videos and articles. The hard part is getting anyone who doesn't already more or less get what you're saying to take any of the information in.

One thing to ask in the midst of debates is what other people want, what they're goals and priorities are -- those can be useful keys to figure out if there's an opportunity to give a solution that meets their needs and what you might have in mind.

You might be a face in the crowd in the world you inhabit now, but the world at large has much more to offer. So keep in mind that there's more to life than what the people you're talking to see. So jump in wherever you'd like.
