RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hey, I just joined. I'm Matt and I'm 15. I'm starting my junior next month. My mom said (and probably the law too) I have to go to school for around a month or so before I can drop out, because I don't turn 16 until September. We'll see how that goes. My tumblr is here.

Welcome, Matt. So she's at least open to the idea of you dropping out? What are you gonna do after that?

Suffice it to say shit happened since you've last been on here. Soul shut down the site, took away modship from everyone but herself, gave it back to xcrit, then some other people, then temporarily shut down the site *again*, and yeah...

RE: Introduction thread

Ok, this looks to me awfully like an introductions item so I will introduce myself. I am Lisa, I'm old, I didn't hate school when I was a kid because I wasn't smart enough to understand that the problem wasn't me, but school. I hope to make up for that now talking to kids about it...IT'S NOT YOU, IT'S SCHOOL!

I'm happily married with 2 teenagers. I want youth to have appropriate equal rights with adults. I think the now matters more than the future. I think all people have an equal ability to grow intelligence.

I say "appropriate equal rights" cuz I don't think 5year olds should drive cars. They are not tall enough.

More later.

Lisa

Introduction thread

Welcome, Lisa Smile

I say if a 5 year old can pass a regular driver's licence test, they should be able to drive. No need to restrict that based on age. Smile

With that said, maybe the driver test should be a bit harder... I wonder about some of the adults who supposedly passed that...

Anyway... what do you do for fun?

Well, a couple of Manhattan phone books and that 5 yr old is good to go. Smile

What I do for fun is push back against school as usual. I am on my school board and have fun being a pain in the ass there. Also hang with my family. Teach violin lessons and make glass beads and jewelry.

Anyway, welcome. Maybe you can inspire some here to research and speak out to their districts' school boards. Smile

RE: Introduction thread

Yes! First find out if your board has a "public comment" section at its meetings. My district almost never has anyone saying anything during that period. Stick to one topic at a time. These people think a lot of themselves so be polite, zing them with your words not with your tone.

If your district doesn't have a public comment period, you have to communicate with teh board chair to get on the agenda. Be specific in your request.

You can also just show up, listen, and if you have some thing to say, try to get "recognized." Or check out the agendas to upcoming meetings adn if something is on it that you care about, get 10 other kids to come with you.

Most adults do not think kids have any idea what's good for them. It's hard to work past that. One possible reply if that is true, it's because kids' intellectual and emotional growth has been stunted and interfered with by the way they are treated and the way education is designed. But even so, kids are still the authority in what they need, in terms of learning, always, and by definition.
