RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Bug Middle School

So, It's my first year.

No one's given me a chance. I'm already labled as 'weird' and I have a bad rep. already. Not for beating people up or anything, but for being myself. I've tried to be nice, but they're just pushed me to that limit where it's even hard to be kind to random people. I'm starting to feel I can't trust anyone and it just plain sucks. To all who have made it through, advice?

Middle School? the grade era usually full of wannabes and egocentric prick children with mostly pathetic parents part of the screwed up system?

Fuck 'em would be my opinion. It's what I did, and strangely it helped me make friends during that period Smile

No worries. High school will be worse, possibly.

Pretty much what brainiac said, if they don't like you, fuck them.
Don't worry about what they label you or what they say about you, because it's all just meaningless words.

I'm in middle school now, and I have never met a single person out of my gifted class who is not an idiot, and even most of the people in my gifted class are idiots.

Just do whatever makes you happy, it's the only way you will get by.

Middle school. Doesn't matter. School in general doesn't matter.

Though, because we live in a fucked up world, if you want a normal, scripted life written by society, you will need to get decent grades in high school and go to college.

But seriously, take it easy in middle school. That portion of your life should be spent on finding what you want to do as a hobby and having fun.

Dead hit the nail on the head. It's all just words. And words have no power over anyone. Your best bet is to just ignore those people and move on with your life. You will meet a friend soon. And after that word will spread that you are a pretty cool person. So go out and enjoy life.

Do your best to find something you're passionate about now while you're still young. Even if your parents force you to get good grades middle school is still really easy. Finding a passion you can put a lot of hours into now should give you more flexibility later when looking for possible income sources. Also, even though few people you meet in middle school will be intelligent don't allow yourself to become a social hermit. Social skills are incredibly valuable and you'd be wise not to neglect them.

^Excellent advice, every word.

Now I'll share some of my own:

I'm sure since you're already on this site, its implied that you realize and understand about how BS the school system is implemented today, however think of it as a perspective, as tough as it probably is. Middle school is only 3 years of your life, and some would say right here to "just get it over with and then you can do what you love", but do what you love now, and after. There's no point in wasting those 3 years conforming to some school norms that won't mean anything to you once you've moved on from them (nor should they when you haven't).

Overall just do what you want to do, and be the person you want to be. Besides, middle school is a great opportunity for you to write angsty poems and stories. So is high school, but we can talk about that in a few years.
