RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Any other fans? This series kicks ass...best show on TV in a while, in my view. The books ain't too bad either.

If there's any discussion in this thread, no spoilers outside of aired episodes pliz.

Fuck yeah. I read the first 2 books, but I've seen all the episodes now. It's pretty damn amazing that it's a TV show, and not a movie. I feel like such production quality would only be available to movies a decade ago.

Game of Thrones

Never watched it, though I intend to.

I tend to go through stages of focus, based on media(be it book or game). At the moment I'm in the Warcraft stage(previously was Command & Conquer Razz). It'll probably be a while till I shift into another stage.(I don't completely abandon a previous stage. I'm prone to going back, such as I did with Lord of the Rings and Star Wars).

If I start Game of Thrones(and at the moment I know almost nothing about the show), I'll become a professional on everything about it(via book, game,TV and wiki)

Talk about maximum experience Smile

Game of Thrones

I watched the TV series first ( seasons one and two), then moved to the books. I'm only on Storm of Swords, not even up to date with the Red Wedding episode coming up tonight, but even now I'm starting to have cynical edgy mouthiness during episodes "WTF WHY IS JAMIE SAVING HER NOW, FFS"

Am I like the only person on earth that doesn't like it? So much backstabbing and cruelty and politics... not my thing. I do like a small handful of the characters that haven't been brutally murdered yet... although I wouldn't be surprised if they get killed off at some point too.

It's funny you posted on the same day as quite possibly the most shocking episode so far in the whole series.

Holy fuck.

I can't even... Fucking brutal.

lol yeah, I saw that episode too. I was like... "so, why exactly do you guys like this show?" ... hahaha. So glad I wasn't paying attention through most of the episode.

That show just really makes me lose faith in humanity, and I prefer to watch things that do the opposite whenever possible.

Pardon the late chiming in, but the way you have to look at it is a critique of swords and sorcery/fantasy stereotypes and tropes. IE:

Robert Baratheon: too much of the 'wine women song and glory' cliche
Ned Stark: too one-sided morally. Too much honor to "play the Game of Thrones."
Renly Baratheon: heart throb who's too popular.

It's kind of a Machiavellian commentary on how those heroes in books aren't actually real, and that's why it's the hot show on HBO right now; those who are highly corrupt still do good things, those who are really good still do corrupt things, and each side is prone to change. The only kinda-neutral character is Tyrion, but he's hardly an anchor.

[Spoilers from here, read at your own risk if you're not caught up through Storm of Swords]

Robb Stark: in the show, it's being too caught up in his yearning for love incompatible with his political aims. In the books, same problem as Ned, only ends up in a marriage: too much dedication to honor and righteousness to really play politics.
Joffrey: Too much of a big bad, evil brat type
Tywin: Too much of a biggest bad xanatos gambit type.

Honor? Sorry I kind of instantly disliked him as soon as he executed that guy right at the beginning just for not dying along with his buddies that got killed by those walker things.

Don't really know the names of a lot of the others that much. Joffrey is kind of lulzy, in a I-want-to-stab-you-in-the-face kind of way.

Dragons, wolves, Arya and potential superpowers are the only things I pay attention for. Razz

That's the realism bleeding in. The medieval concept of power was power over death, and honor as in obeying to a fault the system in place. Conservatism if you will. Ned at least has the balls to kill people himself for disobeying "the law," and be honest about where he stands at almost every juncture.

I saw a chart on Memebase awhile back that said: "favorite character? -> dies. Not your favorite? -> Wil probably die anyways."

I've never seen the show nor read the books. I probably won't do either until it comes on Netflix or my school gets it for the library. I may or may not have a tendency to sneak books out and home and "forget" to take them back... >_>

I'm back~

RE: Game of Thrones

I read the books, it seems like the show has deviated from them slightly? We live in an amazing world where dragons and white walkers can be brought to the screen. I warn you show watchers though, the story is probably not going to have a happy ending.

I love the series because it's realistic to the point of being ruthless or even cruel. i got there after reading Twilight, and seeing some characters die off horribly is refreshing after the shit called twilight.
