RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Thumbs Down Uuughh I want to hit my head against something..

So, I decided I felt like heading to a debate site, because I like reading some debates. However, this one made me flick an eye...
http://www.debate.org/debates/Homeschool...ernment/1/

So, pretty much everyone is for it. What the hell. That to be said, the opposers arguments were seriously lacking (in a nutshell, being that not all can afford school, but I'm sure that not all public schools cost money). I could think of a million reasons that banning homeschooling is a terrible idea. So, I will debunk each relevant point.

Quote:Homeschooling can obstruct the socialization for the children. The children will feel less sociable, and it is difficult for them to adapt with the outside world. Because they are accustomed stay ath their home, so it is possible if the children feel less in sociable with the other people, except their family and their maid.

Actually, it can completely vary, or do the opposite. What about those who get bullied and ostracised constantly? I know one friend of mine who became homeschooled for that reason. Just because you are exposed to more (or lots) of people, does not make you more sociable. It's about common interests, and mostly depending on the person, whether they are shy, an asshole, or whatever. I guess if that point goes, if we stick people in a crowd or with a bunch of strangers, they would feel more social? I'm one of those people where public school didn't influence my social life. Infact, as I got older, I became less social in the real world (hint: I was still in public school). One of my brothers became more social when he left school. My boyfriends social life has not had an impact being in school (and he still an agoraphobic). Some people just don't want to hang out with others, and it's not a big deal as some make it out to be. I'm not seeing any proof with the myth that being homeschooled makes you less social.

Besides, can't homeschooled children be taken out to places, like clubs, seek neighbours and use the internet to socialise? There are more ways than school.

School is not like the outside world. Usually being dominated by people who talk like they have an authority over you, it's a pretty mind-numbing and idealistic one, if you want to call it an outside world. You will not find that many kids condensed into one space. You will not be confined to a classroom, or all people relatively the same age, or be forced to do assignments, tests, or whatever. Neither is actual learning separated into segments. Your life and skills will not (well, shouldn't) be judged on an event evaluated on a piece of paper. It's an artificial environment if you ask me.

Quote:And homeschooling here that can't guarantee if their graduation that has good quality like in piblic school. But you can see student who win in olympics is come from public school not from homeschooling. So, you can get the conclusion. Homeschooling don't give us a good quality student. And I do believe public school gives us many advantages such as increase the socialization for the student who go to the public school, because they have there are many friends and for pshycology side, it's very good. because the student who go to public school will not feel lonely and their friend will accompany that student, so the student can share their problem with their friends not only with their parents.

Wait, so all public schools are good quality? What about poor teaching? Traditional schools aren't optimised for each ones potential, and with a lot of people it just becomes worse. How is it relevant supporting an argument that winning olympians went through public school? Did they even enjoy it and hell, did it even have any use for them? I doubt all went through public school. They got very skilled through extensive practice. Also, not everyone makes friends through school. Sharing problems with friends don't always work out.

Quote: But as we know. Homeschooling is not cheaper than public school. In the public school, government will give the student who lives with poor family. So, the government will give the schoolarship for the students who lives with poor family, government not only gives schoolarship for the student who get achievement. Don't worry if you stay in poor family, it's not mean that you can't go to school, government will gives you schoolarship. And I do believe this programme is running in every countries such as Indonesia it self.

The price depends. Though, student loans are a big joke, since you end up having to pay a lot later anyway. To me, experience speaks louder than a scholarship.

Homeschool doesn't have to be at home. It can be anywhere. Homeschooled students have the independence and freedom no student in the public school system has. Freedom to Learn is guaranteed in homeschooling, and the education of the student is near-perfectly optimized to his/her abilities. They aren't forced to go at the speed of the slowest in the class, or forced to learn the same way everyone else does.

Quote:And homeschooling here that can't guarantee if their graduation that has good quality like in piblic school. You don't need public school to find friends. And list how many homeschoolers are bullied, abused or harassed. That totally tosses the "psychological" and "socialization" out the window. The formation of "cliques" and the primitive barbaric hierarchy formed by students also does not benefit anyone.

Schools are like "territory" that is divided and fought over by different "clans" who all try to out-do one another, either individually or as a group. In a public school, you will observe one of humanities most primitive behaviors.

Quote: But as we know. Homeschooling is not cheaper than public school. In the public school, government will give the student who lives with poor family. Yeah and? The parents are in charge of the fees and the fact it is more centralized and under close control, the parents can better spend money to promote efficiency, whereas nobody really knows where all the money in the education budget exactly goes and how it's exactly spent.

The arguments are pretty weak. So weak, I wouldn't bother hitting my head against anything, but simply smiling at the absurdity.

P.S:Lots of spelling errors in them quotes.

I pretty much agree with all of the points you made. It just bugged me how so many people could agree with such a poorly thought out argument. I don't think English is their first language though, hence the errors.

More than one person did this. I rated it 5 and it only jumped to 2.
