RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Hello everyone!

Hello Biggrin

My name is Gareth and I am in 11th grade in New Zealand.
I came to this website/forum because I am absolutely sick to death of school. I hate everything about it.
I have had a lot of bad experiences at school, bullies and such, and will be very glad when it ends so that I can go on and do plot training. I was top of the class in years 1-6 but after that I started to daydream and dream about flying planes and mountain biking. I can't really control this daydreaming. One minute I am fully focused and am able to do the work and the next I am unaware what is happening and don't know what to do.

I am thinking of finishing school this year after completing my NCEA exams (A levels or GCSEs) to become a commercial pilot. This is something I have always aspired to do and Is the only thing motivating me to go to school.

But the thing that annoys me most is that I love to learn and discover new things but my school does not do anything I like and I find myself daydreaming, trying to get away from what I sincerely believe is HELL.

Any tips for surviving "hell" would be greatly appreciated! Smile

So yeah, that's my life! Biggrin

RE: Hello everyone!

Welcome

Btw, it's awesome that you already know what you want to do! Biggrin

And I'm curious: what are some of the things you'd rather learn at school?

Hello everyone!

Thanks Biggrin

Some things I would rather learn at school would be; physics (can't do it in my year) Aeronautics, proper sports (all the teachers do is leave us to kick a ball around and I end up being left out) and programming (I am in the class that SHOULD be doing that but we ended up just doing word processing)

What would you rather do at school? Biggrin

Hello everyone!

Want to survive hell? Join the devil.
Course school isn't hell. Even the devil shuns it. It's the place naughty demons get sent.

Hello everyone!

Welcome!

I know a guy who is a pilot and gets to fly and teach other people to fly for a living.

AFAIK he had to put in some large amount of flight hours to get his pilot licence, not sure about what else they wanted before that point. But this is South Africa, so it could all be totally different over there.

Nice name, btw. Sounds cool.

Hello everyone!

I was interested in becoming a commercial flight pilot. Then I learned how many hours of flight you needed and decided that I couldn't spare that much time or money.

Hello everyone!

Yeah I have thought about that but I have allready logged some hours from ATC (Air cadets) and I really enjoy everthing about flying, the freedom, the concepts and just the amazing thought that you are actually defying what humans were meant to do. About the cost, I know how much it costs and have thought about what else I could do but nothing else will compensate for flying an aeroplane at speed. Also, I can get a student loan to help pay and our national airline company is requiring a lot more pilots in the future and the provide scholarships for avid flyers.

Haha kind of weird that I am sending this while I am at school Biggrin

Hello everyone!

Yeah. Pilots are really wanted since air travel is still a big industry. I would probably enjoy flying, but will most likely end up with leisure flying.

Maybe till flight simulator hours can be logged. Then I'll start "playing" it a lot more often Biggrin

It would have to be a very flexible and versatile school to put up with my shifts of interest for sure! Laugh
Right now I am really into herbology, the mind and body connection, chinese medicine, alternative healing methods, nutrition, meditation and stuff like that.
I also listen to a lot of audiobooks about setting up your own company and character development.
But this is just what I'm up to right now, I actually have a very very long list of things I want to learn/ try out (these are just some examples):
learning Khmer (Cambodian language) + Brasilian Portuguese
learning to play Cello
trying aerial silk acrobatics
learning to surf
trying archery
...

It would be so awesome if school actually offered these kind of things!

And I'm 100% with you when it comes to the sports part, P.E. is a bad joke, in my case one with a sexist old teacher who seems to think being female means he has to protect you from any participation in serious physical activity whatsoever.
