RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

RE: Worst year of high school?

9th grade was the worst for me because I wasn't used to the various personalities and social groups around me. In Elementary school, everyone thought and acted the same way. In Middle school, it started to break up a bit but because nobody was sure what to do with themselves, this caused a lot of emotional drama and because of which, I can't remember 90% of Middle School ever happening.

High school was roughly the same way, when there were now clear-cut lines between the kinds people. It was difficult but hey, people adapt. Plus, everyone is different. My memory erased every bit of Freshman year for me because it was a bad experience, but who knows? It could be great for you.

Worst year of high school?

10th Grade was worst for me. We had a new teacher for Algebra 2, who was also an admin(guidance counselor). It was horrible, for me. The guy insisted on teaching in some old-fashioned way of telling you how to learn and only do as he did while frequently pointing out how his teacher taught it to him the same way years ago.

And being an admin, he was quite incompetent in balancing his schedule between lessons and "counseloring". Thus there were many times where he would schedule a test for a day but not have it ready, so he'd either postpone it or quickly hand write one on the spot and make copies of it(which tended to have mistakes). There was no syllabus and his lessons were basically taught haphazard. He was also unprepared to teach, having to go over the textbook the very day he was going to teach(and we had him first period every single day, which meant he was usually studying the textbook in class, wasting our time).

It was then where I lost great interest in math and greatly distrusted the guidance counselor to even this day, finding him hypocritical(he'd tell us to do our duties and be responsible yet frequently failed to follow such advice), arrogant and just plain annoying.

But 9-11-12 was not that bad.

RE: Worst year of high school?

the middle 2 years were pretty much the easiest for me, but freshman year I wasn't too sure how to act, so eventually I ended up being how I am today..."Fuck off before I make this awkward you little bitch!"

senior year is the worst though because everybody expects you to have your life planned out by then and it's also around the time that all of your friends might have jobs and you don't even though a company says they will hire pretty much anyone (mcdonald's...pay less...walmart...etc)

The less you try to control things, the less you need to.

Worst year of high school?

I actually love my 12th grade year. Teachers leave us alone, the admin doesn't even bother with us as often and we have a lot more privileges than the other grades. Plus, after the college applications finished, people started to go on vacations earlier(I went to Turkey for 2 months, A couple of my friends at the same time went overseas for a month, others spent a week or two at home or with family.). Our class is quite relaxed and everybody is just waiting for the graduation and dinner to finally leave.

Worst year of high school?

I hated my senior year of high school. My grades were suffering because I wasn't being taught the things I needed to know before going to college. Half the stuff I already knew and the only class keeping me sane was band. I ran for student council president and won. I helped the school crack down on bullying and the cockroach problem. There was an interesting relationship between the number of cockroaches on campus and the number of bullies.

Worst year of high school?

I technically didn't have feelings for 12th grade, seeing that I wasn't intending on attending for that final year.

But I'm sure that if I was to look back, my senior year may hold position of "worst". I wasn't elected into student government(ran for President). Like I foresaw, the winner turned out to be a lame duck that did nothing but make the student government even less reputable in school(it was "new", having started in 2010, with me as first treasurer. Course our Guidance Counselor, who declared himself supervisor of the council, made a whole new constitution and made a bunch of arbitrary rules, destroying the foundation the first council built up). I still suspect something fishy during the vote-counting(seeing that it took place in the guidance counselors office with the two candidates that ended up winning, who were also his favorite students due to their obedience to everything he said)

And not to mention that our administration is unbelievably pathetic, making it seem more and more likely our graduation will not be the way we spent an entire year planning for. Our school also has a rule on having no facial hair, but I've gained some notoriety by walking around with a month old moustache. Unfortunately school will end long before I get it Fu Manchu style.

Worst year of high school?

9th grade,I was bombarded with a lot of ageism.

Hidden stuff:
"CONSENSUAL incest is not wrong. (Abuse victims: being abused by a relative does not make it wrong for others to have consensual incest, any more than rape by a stranger makes all sex wrong. Sex and assault/molestation are two different things.) An aversion became common in humans that aided in population growth as one disease couldn't wipe out the human race. That's not a problem anymore.

Consensual incest is very common. You know people who have been involved, whether you know it or not.

There is no rational reason for keeping laws or taboos against consensual
incest that is consistently applied to other relationships. Personal disgust or religion is only a reason why one person would not want to personally engage in what I call consanguinamory, not why someone else shouldn't do it. An adult should be free to share love, sex, residence, and marriage with ANY consenting adults. Youthful experimentation between close relatives close in age is not uncommon, and there are more people than you'd think out there who are in lifelong healthy, happy relationships with a close relative. It isn't for everyone, but we're not all going to want to have each others' love lives, now are we? If someone thinks YOUR love life is disgusting, should you be thrown in prison?

Some people try to justify their prejudice against consanguineous sex and
marriage by being part-time eugenicists and saying that such relationships inevitably lead to “mutant” or “deformed” babies. This argument can be refuted on several fronts. 1. Some consanguineous relationships involve only people of the same gender. 2. Not all mixed-gender relationships birth biological children. 3. Most births to consanguineous parents do not produce children with significant birth defects or other genetic problems; while births to other parents do sometimes have birth defects. 4. We don’t prevent other people from marrying or deny them their reproductive rights based on increased odds of passing along a genetic problem or inherited disease. It is true that in general, children born to consanguineous parents have an increased chance of these problems than those born to nonconsanguineous parents, but the odds are still minimal. Unless someone is willing to deny reproductive rights and medical privacy to others and force everyone to take genetic tests and bar carriers and the congenitally disabled and women over 35 from having children, then equal protection principles prevent this from being a justification to bar this freedom of association and freedom to marry.

Some say "Your sibling should not be your lover." That is not a reason. It begs the question. Many people have many relationships that have more than one aspect. Some women say their sister is their best friend. Why can’t their sister be a wife, too?

Some say “There is a power differential.” This applies least of all to siblings or cousins who are close in age, but even where the power differential exists, it is not a justification for denying this freedom to sex or to marry. There is a power differential in just about any relationship, sometimes an enormous power differential. To question if consent is truly possible in these cases is insulting and demeaning.

Some say “There are so many people outside of your family." There are plenty of people within one’s own race, too, but that is no reason to ban interracial marriage. So, this isn't a good reason either. Let consenting adults love each other the way they want!"-Keith Pullman

Worst year of high school?

Year 8, because my art teacher was off for 6 months. I missed her so much that I was crying. My Year 8 Form Tutor was yelling at me because of that to make me even more upset and there was a girl who was telling me rude things about my art teacher. Since my art teacher was off for so long, people started spreading rumours about her and were telling each other that she left. I also made two friends, but one of them stopped being friends with me because of something stupid that happened in maths, while I broke friendship with the other one because she threatened to kill Mrs Neal, sexually harrass her, kidnap her son, kill her husband, kill the rest of her family, kill me and kill every teacher at my school except Ms Delaney and Mr Urobo (Her favourite teachers). She said I have no right to save her and that if I call the police and she gets arrested, she'll tell lies and make her family tell lies to the boss of the police to not only get out of jail, but also get the police fired. On the day I broke friendship with her, she also tried to make me miss school for a week to go on a holiday with her. Before that, she was stealing my lunch money, stealing my print credits, making me do her homework for her, making me break the school rules such as "Always walk on the left in corridors and on the stairs", "Seats in the Deli Area are reserved for Year 11's only" and "Back entrance to the canteen is for Year 11's only.", telling me to never talk to my DT teacher because SHE hates her and making me bring her to her lessons. In January, when my art teacher wasn't even back yet, the boy who broke friendship with me for a stupid reason told me to kiss my art teacher's ass. That was very naughty of him. I don't kiss people's butts. And the only teacher that I EVER kissed was my Year 6 teacher by accident. I didn't even like that teacher because she was giving too many warnings, sanctions, keeping too many people back at lunchtime, taking too many minutes of children's Golden Time and ONLY teaching the class about World War II and Mouldy Bread until I started giving her sanctions.

Even though Year 8 was the worst out of the years I've currently been in, I think Year 10 will be the worst because most Year 10's that I know are evil. Five of them wanted to get my math teacher fired just cause they enjoy it when she cries and one of them threatened to crack my head open. I'm afraid of turning evil like them from just being in Year 10. I don't want to bully Year 9's or get teachers fired.

By the way, I live in the UK, not in the US.

RE: Worst year of high school?

After finishing high school I must say....

Freshman - Not bad actually, though I was on a freshman campus. I had decent friends, I was moderately popular, and my awtisuhm was strong which made things much better.

Sophomore - Pure shiet. Just bored, sleepy, and tired. Also dealt with some douchebags.

Junior - Kinda mixed. Long long story.

Senior - Same, except again I was moderately popular and everyone acts a LOT nicer because everyone will be going their own way afterwards. Bittersweet.

Gotta say that sophomore and junior are the worst. Senior and Freshman were tolerable. Some of my fondest memories were from those times.

Worst year of high school?

Freshman year was the worst for me. I was too immature to deal with my problems in anything resembling a healthy manner. I tried to maintain relationships with other people, but because of my mental state they didn't feel genuine. Got sent to therapy, I lied and said I felt better to get out of it.

Sophomore/junior year I just tried to isolate myself as much as possible and ignore my problems.

I'm in my senior year right now, and taking steps to fix them. My schedule is light right now, and graduation is around the corner. I'd say that this is the best year out of the ones I've had.
