RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Fear

Other than God, nothing much.

But that's for the way you mean in. The emotional thing that people refer to when they define fear, which I find inaccurate since fear is natural.

In the logically true sense, I'm afraid of a shit load of things else I wouldn't be alive. Fear is a natural response of our body, a defense mechanism that has kept us alive. Anything we perceive as a threat incites "fear", though depending on the level of threat it may either be reacted against with aggression or running for hills.

Fear

One word.

Dying.

"The difference between school and life? In school, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches a lesson."-Tom Bodett

"I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don't teach you how to walk away from someone you don't love any longer. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing."-Neil Gaimen

Fear

Death is something we all fear naturally speaking. Course some decide to ignore that very bad feeling.

Fear

I used to be scared of dying. Not so much anymore. It doesn't mean if a car were about to run me over, I wouldn't get the fuck out of the way. It also doesn't mean that I wouldn't be devastated if I found out I was going to die in a week. And I can't give up because I know someone who makes my life worth living.

But dying is just something everyone has to do. A part of life. If humans didn't die, we wouldn't have room for new ones. Immortality would just be never-ending misery after a while.

I don't know, maybe I'm just ignoring my feelings, like brainiac said. Or maybe it's the fact that I only take things seriously that I care about. Which really isn't much.

I've got no problem with dying. Plus, it's like how the airforce does it(based on hearsay). You get in that plane, and you're dead. That way, you don't really worry about death while in the air or in combat because you've already concluded that you're a dead man as soon as you got into that cockpit. We're all technically dead, we just haven't gotten to the time-space period of our death yet.

But I wouldn't mind immortality. Being semi-insane, I'd always have something fun to do. Yet being disciplined and good at self-control, I wouldn't go overboard and ruin my long-term fun.

fearing fear is a paradox. You end up fearing which defeats the purpose of fearing fear because you arent fearing fear but being the fearful thing you want to avoid. FDR just wanted to mindfuck Americans over the cool newish thing known as a radio.

Fear

A fear of death is irrational. Doesn't matter to you after you die. An instinct to survive, however, is completely normal.

RE: Fear

Yep. One of those Greek dudes said fear of death is as stupid as fearing your birth. And the fear of dying is the same thing as the fear of life because all life really is is the dying process. Which brings me back to my fear of the universe. It's the decomposition of everything. NOT the post-decomposition but the process of entropy.

Uh, energy can't be created or destroyed but nothing lasts forever. Can one of you geniuses explain that one to me?

Fear

I say that energy is the base form of everything. Seeing that every atom suffers radioactive decay(half-life), I'd make the assumption that matter will simply "die" and turn into a form of energy. Also seeing that the law of conservation of energy says as you have, that it can not be created or destroyed, it seems likely that energy is the final form of everything in existence.

Course it's difficult because no one knows just what energy actually is. We've got a ton of energy, such as kinetic, potential, radiant, thermal, chemical, electrical etc.

This also means that when energy and matter stop flowing and we reach thermodynamic equilibrium, the universe is dead.(Heat Death of Universe).

My assumption? Energy isn't something of itself but part of a bigger "thing"(AKA universe) that will die once the factor of energy reaches equality(as in every part of the universe has reached a state of equilibrium of energy, thus no longer flow). The 2nd law of thermodynamics seems to tell us this. Maximum Entropy is also another name for Heat Death(Course there is also something known as Cold Death, which is exact opposite and in my opinion, a less calmer way of dying)

I can't say anything for certain. I'm about to go to bed now, which means I didn't get much time to research into this stuff. I do intend to study into this stuff tomorrow though.
