RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Chores Vs. School

The past few days I have been incredibly reluctant to get out of bed, and go to school. When I don't get out of bed I'm usually yelled at for 1-2 minutes then I get a fresh shirt on, and head to school.
Not today... today it was the same routine but, my mum asked if I was going to school today. After 1 minute of contemplation, I said "No." she sighed, and said I'd be put to work, my reply "better than school." I then fell back asleep.
An hour after I fell asleep I was woken and told it was time to work. I got up, quickly changed, and went to the kitchen. Where she told be to clean out the cereal cupboard (now the cereal/misc. appliances cupboard) I complained about the quantity of shreddies. She said she ate the honey ones (I have never seen her eaten them), dad ate the normal ones. (He rarely eats them. Once every 2 months) I said fine and sorted them. Then started clearing out the pots, and pans cupboard, where I got rid of most of the pots. (They were the really small ones, about your fists put together) Kept all the pans. Then decided that the lower half of the cereal cupboard is going to be the misc. appliance cupboard, then sorted them in that. Cleared out the cutlery draw, then I was told to mow the back lawn.
Which was the first time I use the mower, I felt pretty good that my "more fat than muscle" arm started it. Then I used a weed-whacker to touch up the spots I missed. Then I showered as I was covered in grass, and torn up weeds. Over all it was a pretty good day.
I didn't have to go to school, I got to sort stuff (I weirdly like sorting Cuckoo) I was ask if I was going to school tomorrow, I said "No"
If it's anything like today, it's going to be alright.

P.S. Sorry for basically telling you my day

Do you think your parents were expecting you to be put-off by having to work all day?
P.S. P.S. Stands for Post Script, I think the term comes from the Latin post scriptum, an expression meaning "written after".
P.P.S Funny, I didn't learn that at school.

Chores Vs. School: Day 2

(Turns out I didn't finish writing it?)
Second day of doing Chores instead of school; It was worse. It started with sorting the containers, lazy suzy, and under the sink cupboards. Which was fine.
Then I had to remove the grass that was growing between the paving stones in the backyard. Yes, I'm serious. After about 3 minutes, I decided "Fuck it!", and went to wash the windows.
Let's say I don't like washing windows. My hands still feel really weird; I don't like that feeling.
Then I had to scrub dirt of the handrail part of the porch, which was worse than the windows by far.
I then took a lunch break, and ate soup; finished, and started on the porch again, 30 minutes later I was done.
Went inside, and check my interweb stuff.
Today was worse than yesterday. I've decide to go back to school on Monday, as I don't have school Friday.
Truthfully I'm probably going to get my "Dogwood" instead of 4 years of horribleness.
P.S. I learnt what semi-colons do, from my sister.

Chores Vs. School

My mother once told me that we should clean the windows. I gave her a funny look then said "But doesn't the rain already do that?". I then chuckled and went back to what I was doing while my mother simply gave it up.

I usually clean the dishes every night, make the tea we drink after dinner and some other basic stuff. Been doing it for a while. It's never a problem because I'm pretty damn good at it, which means I get no complaints.

And I haven't watched Game of Thrones, but I intend to start sometime. I have a habit of binge watching TV shows via online sites. But I've got some shows I've started(and I limit myself to a certain amount of shows not to get confused).

Oh and for certain jobs, you can slightly work at them. I do that for certain things I know my mother will most likely miss if I tell her I did it and remain neutral in expression. Like If I was told to wash the windows, I'd make sure my mother wasn't watching then I'd spray the windows with a waterhose, without even touching them. But like I said, We don't do the windows because of my instance that nature will take care of it.

Chores Vs. School

The satisfaction of physical work chores is far greater than the "satisfaction" of school-inhabited mental chores.

I'd take organizing the cupboards over mindless memorization any day.

True. I actually feel some level of satisfaction when I do house work. Like when I have to re-organize my bookshelf, I feel satisfaction when I see how neatly I've organized the books, or how the floor I vacuumed looks cleaner.

Haven't felt anything similar in school for the last many years.
