RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

i failed my life
Interesting logic there. Only humans are capable of making paradoxical thoughts without realizing how contradictory it is.
I wouldn't say you failed life, seeing that you're only 14 years into the life cycle of a human. It would be wise to ignore outside interference and first concentrate one exactly why you're failing. If you can find the source of the problem, you can prepare a logical solution which can be presented to your parents. Hopefully that will provide something worth pursuing(If necessary, aim for a low-blow with a subtle mentioning of how your parents aren't actively trying to figure out why you failed but rather simply punish you in hopes you don't)

i failed my life
4 years huh...
See, the problem is that minors are essentially considered property of their parents. Nobody could possibly hope to impose severe restrictions of rights on an adult, and yet the "guardians" can take away all but a child's life without running into legal trouble.
Well, I can think of 3 solutions:
1. If your parents are decent and were simply angry, then pass from now on and maybe they'll lift the ban. I'm not accusing you of being lazy or stupid, but most people can probably make a 1.7 GPA.
Well, don't I wish that were the only thing I had to do, but no, apparently if I don't get all A's in "GT" courses, I am doomed to flip burgers, beg for money, and live on a diet of burnt cigarettes for the remainder of my life.
2. If your parents are a complete pain in the ass like mine, and there's more problems to them than this, you could try for child emancipation. I don't know the laws concerning it in your state, but you generally have to write up some sort of petition. If it doesn't get through, you'll have hell to pay, and if it requires a guardian's approval, then consider your chances of success at the approximate 0% mark with a degree of error of +1%. Add to this the victim blaming common in cases of non-sexual child abuse and society's general disdain for youth and you have a very difficult situation on your hands, but if nothing else, it is legal.
3. If your parents are the type outlined in #2, you could run away. I can't help you too much with that, but if you are actually seriously considering this (hopefully not), we could give you advice.
Best wishes.

Please do NOT run away. I have never ran away from home, but if your parents call law enforcement they'll be looking for you. I heard of some states that say this is against the law, and those who help you out with it can get in trouble for it too.
I've just had encounters with law enforcement before. I was never arrested or anything, but they're assholes and from my personal experience, they'll just believe everything the parents/guardians say and anything you'll say they'll always find a loophole around.
I really dislike law enforcement, honestly. They should be emotionless but they're just too damn human. They should do their job, but need to be as closely moderate as possible. I also think they should wear suits that cover their face, so any expressions they make are hidden.

You haven't failed life. I want to talk about how many students would have failed if I didn't argue with them in our staff meetings but a lot of good that does you. Do you have anyone who will advocate for you to pass? Your parents, an administrator, a counselor, or a sympathetic teacher? I can't say the ends and outs of your district, but where I am, if students are being retained, certain people have the authority to override the teachers who failed you. Because I teach general education and special ed and I write education plans I can call a committee and pass a student other teachers have failed just because the student is on my caseload. But first I strong arm the teachers that won't the fail the students. I tell them I'm going to have their books audited to make sure they can justify failing this student. I phrase it like, ' You know, if we just pass this kid we can save you all the hassle of having your grade books combed up over...' I know that doesn't help you in particular but retaining a student is a big decision and it's usually not as simple as just being a numbers game based on your grades. There are some behind the scene politics. Most the teachers I talk to are very nonchalant about failing their students without compassion for how devastating it can be. I'm sorry this post is mostly about me and not you. I hope it's in some way helpful to hear what I have to say about the process.
But anyway, back to how I started. You haven't failed life. You'll be ok. It's hard but not THAT bad. Just do what you need to do. Study and stay out of trouble. Life will get better. It wish there were more I could do for you. Keep your head up!
If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

What if you need a computer or internet to research schoolwork? What if watching educational videos online will help you study?
Stuff like Khan Academy, and whatever else there is.
Show that sort of thing to your parents and try to convince them that you will use technology to help you do better in school.
Then actually DO use it for that purpose, and also for some other stuff you don't want to stop doing (when they're not looking, unless they are OK with it).

I don't see why people think that if you get bad grades in math, you're a complete fail...
