RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Hello

I'm Madeline. I'm not very good with words, so I apologize in advance. Umm, I have social anxiety and I'm thinking of dropping out of high school. I like poetry and art.

Oh, I don't know much about economics or political philosophy.

Hello

Nein! Sie lesen solten Das Kapital!(Written through my little knowledge of German words I've picked up here and there. Not sure how correct I am Smile )

Welcome to SS. I consider myself an Armchair General(seeing I'm not a general just yet. That process will start after college or so) and like the sciences, some technology, politics, a bit of economics and want to conquer the world and make all humans my subjects spread peace and happiness.<-Lie

Hello

Hi there!

Do you write poems and make art yourself as well?

RE: Hello

I don't believe you when you say that you're not very good with words. Usually when people come to that conclusion about themselves, it's actually just a lack of confidence and anxiety clogging their mind up to the point where it's difficult for the words that they want to express to come out. Beneath that facade of anxiety, I believe that you're capable of forming exquisite sentences that ring pleasurably in the ear, and I will continue to believe so indefinitely. Anyway, welcome to SS. What's your straight jacket size, maam?

Hello

I thought straight jacket's were one-size-fits-all with those belts and stuff to make it fit. Or that's how mine is...

You're funny and thank you, but I think that if the words can't come out in a way that is understood than they are useless. It doesn't matter what's stopping them. Not everyone is capable is ways of communication.

I understand you perfectly fine. Of course online communication is much easier than oral communication, which I shuddered at the thought of throughout my early teenage years. After a little practice though, it can become sort of routine. A lot of people with social phobia develop problems expressing themselves just because they fall completely out of practice. I went two years without communicating at all with anybody in my age group in person from 12-14. Obviously this gave me some problems. A few years later and my in person communication skills can be described as nearly normal with a few so-called quirks which I won't even bother to iron out because I like them.

Who am I? Who are YOU?
