RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Succeeding in a world you were not built for.

"Life's a game that one plays according to the rules" - Mr.Spencer "The Catcher in The Rye"

The world is full of successful people that hated school. But they loved to learn. Information has never made anyone smarter or better at something. Its applying that information and formulating your own opinions and ideas. That is the main fallacy of education today.

I'm going to come right out and say if your someone who hates school because its hard, boring, or they just don't give a shit about life in general. Please leave. This thread is for those of us that love learning. That are willing to put forth the work to make it. For those circles among us that don't fit into the square hole on the board.

Education today tells us when the French Revolution happened. And maybe even why. Buts that it, it wants us to memorize it and vomit the information back up on the test. They don't let you formulate an opinion. Nixon was arguably a terrible man. He lied. He cheated. He stole. And there is a little bit of evidence that he may have ordered some people to "take a vacation". He quoted "You see, homosexuality, dope,
immorality in general: These are the enemies of strong societies."

And i agree with him. Hitler had a quote about multiculturalism. It roughly equated to saying multiculturalism doesn't work. And i agree with him. But that's not something i can admit. I can't go to my teacher and say "Hey i agree with Hitler!" Even if i pose a rational persuasive argument its makes no sense. I am a monster. I am a mistake in there eyes. A mutation of society. I have an opinion i wasn't supposed to have. Regardless of weather or not you agree this poses a valid point.

The current "Academic Conveyer Belt" culture we have is designed perfectly to keep people adhering to the system. They don't want deviation. The Baby Boomers were the ones that created this. They were the ones that keep pushing us to go to college. Now i don't know about you but i am forgoing college for the military and starting a business.

Why? Because i wasn't built for school. I am a autodidactic learner. And college just means for more years of the same old same old.

Back to the original quote. Life is a game you play according to the rules. Fact. Lets all accept the fact that we are not revolutionaries. We are not going to change anything for ourselves. Even Bill Gates hasn't been able to make a dent in education reform. But school is not the issue.

Its what happens outside of school. People tell you to do well in school so you can have a good life. They tell you to go to college because they think that is needed to provide a fulfilling and successful career. They want you to play the game there way.

The Bill Gate's of the world were people that played the game by the rules. And then flipped the fucking game board on everyone. They didn't like the hand they were dealt and they threw it in the face of the world.

Alot of bitching goes on here. Which is good. I like bitching, i do it quite a bit. I hate when all i want to do is bitch and yet i am teachers, parents, and peers telling you the way it is.

But what we don't do is formulate pragmatic solutions for the future. This world is not built for us. The game was rigged from the start. So instead of just complaining. Lets flip the board over.
