RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The past.

Well, we should be learning. The question is, do schools give us the freedom to do that?

You should be learning about whichever or whatever the hell you want. Some past stuff can be useful to know, but memorizing dates sure as hell isn't.

Should we be learning about the past or about our real future?

People say we learn about the past so we don't make the same mistakes and fine, I now know how America was started, how Australia was discovered, the gold rushes and all that jazz. I enjoyed learning about them too, but I'll never understand how spewing out dates and figures is going to stop me from making mistakes. As far as I'm concerned they are irrelevant to my future and more importantly my future happiness.

RE: Should we be learning about the past or about our real future?

So you say that learning about how General Custard fucked up at Little Bighorn does not teach you a lesson in not fucking up the way he fucked up thus leading to his death?

There is always something to learn from the past and to do in the future. However it is all meaningless if you dont do shit in the present.

RE: Should we be learning about the past or about our real future?

Learn how to Communicate, Research and learn some Maths... you will have access to anything in the world you wish to learn in the future. Learn History because if you don't learn its lessons, you're doomed to repeat its mistakes. Don't memorise dates though - you don't need to know when General Custard screwed up, you need to how he screwed, why he screwed up and what you can do to not repeat history.

We should learn from their mistakes. They overpopulated, depleted their resources, and ended up having to eat each other.

RE: Should we be learning about the past or about our real future?

Right, so if that's true, bearing in mind the limits of the study of history [If future archaeologists applied the same ideas to us as we do to past civilizations they could conclude that "Kellogg's" boxes were some kind of religious icons, because it's the same word written exactly the same way, along with depictions of various "gods" (cartoon animals) and "offerings" (cereals). ] , we should y'know ... not do that? But we don't need to know when it happened. We need to know why they did that and what we can do to prevent history repeating itself.

If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.

Pretty much this. Learn about anything you want and use the past as an inspiration to make changes.

No need to worry about that. When oil runs out in 50 years, everyone will realize "Well shit, can't let this happen again." and at that point we will be forced to slow down resource consumption because no more easy energy.

I think we should focus on the past and focus on connecting past events to present events so we will be able to recognize the patterns of oppression and lies and end it.

So I’d rather die for a cause than live a life that is worthless
I don’t need the circus or the day of national observance

Surely in 50 years we'll have developed some sort of technology to reduce our need of petroleum. We've already begun developing Nuclear energy using Thorium as fuel(which is cleaner, more abundant and significantly harder to convert into a weapon), rather than Uranium.

I don't think knowing the ancient Mesopotamians invented the wheel will help us much in life.

I wonder how many times we re-invented the wheel...
