RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I used to love history. Now I hate it.

My history teacher decided to send me all my assignments at the eleventh hour, and this is all I have to do (and my mom says "It's not a lot" ironically):

7 history tests
3 sets of history flashcards
3 newspapers

And my mom expects me to finish it all in 3-1/2 hours!!

Trust me, I'm not doing it all...tonight.

One of my other goals is to make this forum a bit of my own class...So, tell me, how you feel about the new rule of having you do homework? Or you get another warning. So, do you want to do this or not?...Please send a PM and tell me if you're willing or not. I will probably give you 24 hours to send the PM. No PM will indicate to me that, no, you don't want to do things in this new way. So, you will be saying goodbye."

Do you hate history, or simply history class?
The latter? Now that is the beauty of school.

What?

I hate it when teachers try to make up for their own lack by shoving out all the work they had to give before at the last minute and expect you to do them all.

History work? Eh, close enough.
Point being that school can take something you enjoy, and turn it into a boiling pot of Earth hell.

A job well done for the aristocracy.

An anti-intellectual society is a manageable one.

We had these review days where students would go up and have to explain the important historical events and names, which was answering the questions the teacher asked, as a review. I stood up there for all 45 minutes of class and literally went through the chapter(It was more memory, I have a pretty good memory, though I wish I had the better photographic one. I'm not that close but close enough Smile )

But being a World War 2 buff, I always wanted to get to that part in our class(but we never did get there)

Perfect example of school ruining history:

http://www.school-survival.net/articles/..._rebel.php

Quote:Take two children. Give the first freedom and liberty, give him a wealth of books and movies, give him teachers to aid him upon his request and a place that encourages art, creativity, and independence. Then take away the freedom and liberty of the second, require his presence in a classroom in front of a teacher, threaten him with a jail sentence if he does not go to his school. Give each of them ten or fifteen years, and check the development of each of them after this amount of time. The only forced to endure slavery may be able to stand in a lecture hall and he might be able to say to you, "George Washington was born in 1732 and died in 1799. In 1776, the Revolutionary War began where he acted as general. In 1783, it ended. In 1789, he was elected president a first time, and in 1792, he was elected president a second time." You are given dates and events, surely, it is true history. But take the child who was given freedom to do as he pleased, and he might be able to stand in a lecture hall and tell you, "In the sixteenth century, in Europe, a Spanish physician by the name of Michael Servetus was convicted of heresy by the Roman Catholic Church. Fleeing from his oppressors, he made it to Geneva, where the vindictive John Calvin had absolute authority. In earlier years, Servetus expressed his doubt on Calvin's protestant religion. Once captured by the authorities, Servetus was burned to death at the orders of John Calvin in 1533. They had him wear a hat of sulfur and used slow-burning wood, that the crowd could listen to screams for mercy for the duration of a half hour. One year after the death of this man, Calvin published a list of insults of his former enemy."

As someone who goes to an Online School atm, I can confirm that teachers are actually worse at these schools. At least teachers at real schools do shit. My damn English teacher (if you can call her that) is a fucking idiot. I started this school in February, so I needed to be moved to where I should be. Instead of doing that, she says that I can do the assessment for these two things and then be done, or start from the beginning. I obviously went with the former. Now, I'm having problems with the second assessment because of their shitty software, but I got the first one done. Immediately after I did it, I contacted her. And guess what, she did nothing. So about a month later, the school counselor (who I was set up with and I am now ignoring) contacted her and she still hasn't done a damned thing.

Well, the teachers for mine are just recorded lecture videos of teachers with a bunch of crap on screen...
