RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Because mainstream society hates the human body. It's ok to delight in destroying it but sinful to celebrate its beauty.

Mostly because violence has kind of wormed it's way in. If you go back a while ago, it wouldn't be like that. But then, more and more movies, books, and video games (later) started to use more violence. Parents didn't understand the rating system and/or just didn't research what they were giving their children and then those children thought violence was acceptable for children to see and carried that on into their adult life.

That's just my guess.

Odd indeed. Humankind has a tendency for violence, even considering acts of violence as a status of reputation and standing in the social hierarchy. Humankind also has a tendency for nude-based thoughts, such as the historical obsession with the penis and breast(and obviously vagina). Perhaps it's believed that a so-called "civilized" society does not dwell with such animalistic things, though it's quite obvious that such things have only be re-directed or done more discreetly.

RE: Why is violence more acceptable than nudity?

An interesting topic, I too have wondered how a society weaves taboo like it would a tacky pillowcase. While we can attribute the fear of nudity to the social construct of shame; it is difficult to find a reason why excessive violence is so readily accepted in it's stead.

If I were to have to take a wild shot, I could blame religion, or the fact that violence is particularly necessary to win wars (which incidentally is a priority to those at the the top)

But I don't bet at darts if I don't think I can't get a bullseye. I think if you get rid of all the constructs of human interaction and look at true motives. It is very easy to understand violence, there is a clear dark logic to every gruesome action a person can undertake. While nudity, sexuality, these are things not totally defined in our primary codeing...why we may even have to understand abit about ourselves...and wouldn't that be a tragedy.

Because the star chamber needs a monopoly on boobies in order to control our minds.

There are varying levels of bad taste, and nudity (which appears to promote sexual promiscuity) is just one of the higher levels.

I don't see why you're saying that violence isn't taboo, though. Graphic violence isn't seen in anything aimed at children (graphic videogames, for example, are still rated M, or at the very least T) - there's just a lot of cartoonish violence out there today, that's all.

I think our outlook on it is just about right here.

Why is violence more acceptable than nudity?

Oh no. Not the horrifying rating system.

I have Red Faction, made more than 10 years ago for PS2, and It was rated M. However, now there are games with a ton of blood and decapitations(How fun!...I mean bad, very bad*badass*) and are rated T. As you can see, pixelated splotches of blood your barely see was considered quite violent whereas as now, parents don't seem to think slicing a human head off is actually that bad.(Of course it all depends on the type of parents on the board to decide the rating). Thus ratings are very subjective, depending on the parents who are voting on what rating to give(You put a bunch of severely conservative bible thumpers on the ESRB and let's see how many games even get a rated E)

Our outlook is actually quite screwed up. There are some people who are even unable to speak clearly about the topic of nudity, making references and analogies rather than saying directly what needs to be said. The view on nudity has made certain words taboo, in my opinion. Yet such also perverts the meaning of words. Penis, a reference to the male genitalia, has become something you shouldn't say in public, yet it's common knowledge that males have an organ called a penis and pretty much know what the penis looks like and what it does. Try saying penis in school without being thought of as a pervert or being "disciplined".

Like I said, we've simply been suppressing our natural views on sexuality and nudity, and have slowly been confusing the naked human body for something of sexual meaning. I'm quite sure Renaissance artists didn't giggle and stare at the penis of the statue they made but actual admired the nude figure for it's representation of the human body. Now, half the people that walk by such statues in museums fixate upon the penis or vagina or breasts as if it's some sort of evil thing they still want to look at but not let others know it.

I won't say religion is the problem because religion is only an excuse. In the end, it's humanity that does the action or inaction. Ideas don't speak, People do. Thus, the true problems stem from the perception of the human society at that period of time. Culture is simply a manifestation of the perceived beliefs. A culture may seem odd to you because you are incapable of perceiving things the way they do.
