RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Panic attacks? So what?

Today is, I think, literally the worst day of my life.
Long story short, I forgot to do my homework and my friend lent me his paper to copy off of. My fault: I was very indiscreet about it and my teacher caught me. Now I didn't really care--give me a 0, get me in trouble, I don't give a shit, but I didn't want my friend to get in trouble. So I figured, hey, this teacher likes me, and if I muster up a few crocodile tears I can come out of this with both his and my slates clean.
That was my initial plan. But I have anxiety and therefore am easily susceptible to panic attacks. So before I knew it I was hyperventilating, I couldn't feel my face, and I collapsed in the hallway.
Shit.

Needless to say I never want to go back to school again. If the sheer embarrassment of having a panic attack in front of my peers wasn't bad enough, the teachers and counselor don't even give a shit about the fact I was having a panic attack, no, who cares about that? They were more concentrated on the fact that I was cheating.

On one. Fucking. Worksheet.

I also love the fact that while I was sitting in the office hyperventilating, they kept repeating over and over, "Just take a deep breath."
Hello, I am hyperventilating. As though that thought didn't cross my mind!

I just needed to get this off my chest...it just seems like no one really understands. Getting caught cheating is the fucking least of my worries, dammit.

On the bright side, my friend didn't get in trouble at the end of it. So...I guess that part of my work worked out okay, ha ha.

Your school is a health liability.
Threaten to sue them.
Teach them the definition of hyperventilate.
Not like your the only one that gets panic attacks.(I havent though)
You weren't cheating, you were comparing answers.

Yikes... I still have bad dreams sometimes about being in school and realizing I didn't do my homework. And I got out of there more than 10 years ago...

It's not like you murdered someone. Nobody died. Nobody was hurt. Just some stupid school crap nobody will care about a week from now, and won't even remember in a year or 2. It isn't worth the stress... your health is more important.

+1

Your school needs to know what hyperventilating is. You could have gotten hurt and they only told you to "take a deep breath".

RE: Panic attacks? So what?

You're hyperventilating? Take a few good deep breaths.
Perhaps the dumbest thing you can tell someone who is hyperventilating, seeing that they've already breathed themselves full of oxygen.

Id say you collapsed due to overdosing on that oxygen. Technically id find the school at fault for it because they practically told you to do the one thing you shouldnt have done. Their lucky you didny suffer a large injury because caused it.

I find this available for immediate complaint. Their misinformation and neglect led to a danger to your health.

RE: Panic attacks? So what?

That's disgusting. It seems like no school official knows a panic attack is. This is like when my friend got arrested and had to go to court because a stupid teacher didn't realize that hey, this girl's having a panic attack, you may not wanna corner her in in case she, oh, I don't know, blows up in your face.

I'm a girl ffffeck

You know. Teachers also like to tell you to tilt your head back when your nose bleeds. Somewhat illogical seeing that I'm supposed to get the blood to bleed outwards, not try to drown myself in it.

Perhaps educators need to be given basic health instructions so they don't give pointless and stupid medical advice. Old wives' remedies are not medical treatments.
