RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

One evil of school. Girl advice.

In my Algebra 2 class I sit next to a very cute girl. We get yelled at for talking in class, I help her on her homework and vice versa, I walk her to her next class, we text after school, etc. All that cute couple shit.

The problem is, she's a junior but I'm a sophomore.

Actually, that's not a problem, she just made it up in her head that it is a problem. She thinks her friends make sly comments about her and make fun of her (yeah, friends alright) for liking me. She actually said she would date me if I was older.

This is one evil of school. Growing up we're kept in one age group. No exposure to other age groups. Segregated. When we waver from our age group, usually to younger ages, the society of school tends to think it's weird. We're promptly told it's weird and to stop doing that.

Here's the advice part:

She's told me she really likes me and of course I really like her. We've kissed, made out, etc. Nothing too serious but I really want to date her. The real problem is every other week or so she backs away insisting it's a problem that I'm younger. I have slightly convinced her it's not a problem but she's still having trouble accepting it. I just don't know if it's worth fighting this if she's worried about something so superficial, but I don't want to just (metaphorically) throw her out the door and move on.

The whole age exclusiveness is one thing I agree is really an issue. Gatto also pointed it out in his books, how basically it's a way to break youth away from its past.

It's a prison game - the grade (age, not paper) structure is engineered to pit prisoners against each other so that they do not fight the establishment. A clever trick, and unfortunately very few see past it.

One evil of school. Girl advice.

I had a similar issue with age, though maybe not in the same way. I had a hard time finding suitable mates of my age group that I would like. I'm a picky fellow and I have a set standard and know what I like(rather than most of those hormonally driven apes who'll drool over the first pair of large "buns", plump bosoms and visible skin). The pool of possible candidates as per proper social standard tends to be quite tainted, leaving me at a loss(Because strange enough, no one really has an issue with older male-younger female but has an issue with vice-versa).

Such belief also makes the older group follow along that flawed view(It's usually agreed the suitable age for relationships involving the full level of what a relationship constitutes, which basically means the sex that is literally the other half, is around 16 and above) and tend to see it as wrong to view a younger male as a mate.

How much older is she than you anyway? The age difference can't be that great as to be an issue, thus making her concerns superficial and unwarranted. It's quite socially common for the difference being around 2 or even 3 years. Unless they find it logical to seek a mate who was born within the 365(or 366 for leap years) days of their birth year. The supposed net human growth per year is 73 million, which when compared to the overall 7.076 billion total, which is only about 1% of the population being of your year of birth. Now, when you bring it down to a national level, then a regional level, then a state level, then a county level then inter-city level, you just decreased your pool. If this is in the USA, that goes down even further(as the US has a higher ratio of females to males).

Course one never thinks to such a grand scheme, focusing upon their immediate surrounding(I dare not say walking distance, for a human can cover quite a large distance by walking, yet few today are willing to even shorten their wait time by taking stairs and rather waiting for the eleveator. I for one average 4 miles in an hour of walking at my normal speed and if I see that taking the stairs will be quicker, I don't even think of the physical exertion.)

Bottom line?: Her viewing of age as an obstacle is foolish and immature and that if she really liked you, such a minor difference would not be a problem.

So, what's the actual age difference then? I don't know what this junior/sophomore shit means. Laugh

Since you two are in the same class, I'm guessing it's something like 1-2 years? Which is nothing.

When you're both 90-something years old, it will be completely insignificant. Even when you're both 30, or 20-something. It's nothing. It just seems like more of an issue now because it's a higher percentage of your total age. But it's not a very high percentage (going by the assumption that it's 1-2 years, and that you guys are somewhere around 13-18).

And since you guys have already done a lot of couple type shit, what's the actual difference between that and dating? I don't even understand. Is it just to do it more often? Just that it's more "official"? This stuff confuses me. Razz

Maybe she's just scared that people will make fun of her more? Ask her what she's actually afraid of. Maybe she doesn't want to "ruin your innocence" or somesuch. I dunno. I think it'd probably help to ask her exactly what bugs her about it. Shrug

Yeah it makes it more official. She has commitment issues though. (Red flag, huh?)

Only a year? She has a problem with one year difference? What the hell?

However, her indecisiveness, in my opinion, seem to stem from her inability to make a sound decision by herself. She thus depends on others to give their opinions and by the look of it, those she consults are utter dimwits and incapable of coming with up with even a plausible reason for their thoughts except for "I saw on TV.." as evidence.

I'd suggest trying to be the one who does more of the consulting and persuade her.

Strangely enough, woman have a paradox where they seem to know and not know yet not want you to know they don't know so you think they know and thus thinking that you know that they know will keep you from letting them know what they don't know(What I've observed).

Possibly this.

Or maybe she doesn't like the concept of dating in general.

Anyway, why force it? You two like each other, so do whatever you're both comfortable with, and don't try to force anything either of you isn't comfortable with.

Agreed. There is no need to request an action with a specific title when that action doesn't require that title. AKA Dating. One does not have to call the act of dating dating, but perhaps rephrase it or never mention it. Seek to spend time together, which seems to be successful, without giving a title. Lunch is just lunch, a walk in the park just a walk in the park, rather than clumped together as "dating".

As far as I can understand from what you've explained, there seems to be some relationship going on between the two of you. Thus, there isn't really a complete issue except for some inconsequential problem that doesn't seem to have a great effect if you handle it correctly. It's an obstacle that'll require you to take an extra step to move around, rather than assume it to be a total hindrance.
