RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: Teachers actually think we care

The only thing that we, well, I, care about is getting out of school and never having to go back there because my teachers are pieces of shit.

Cool story, bro. Tell it again.

I know what you mean. Most of the teachers I have this year aren't sensible people, but I'm lucky enough to have at least one this year. Either way, I want to leave this hell-hole of a prison ASAP.

I often forget about the existence of the thanks button on these forums...

Whatever, Wes. Hahahaha. I'm a junior, by my senior year I will show the school how I feel. I'm not sure how yet, but I do. Chaos is not the preferred way because that won't do anything. Any ideas? I want to incite a rebellion without being censored.

Teachers actually think we care

I don't care. The only thing I 'care' about is getting a "D" so I could at least go to community college. Because 4 year colleges are bullshit. You need courses you don't want and you need a required GPA. So fuck them. Businesses need to realize I could be just as "qualified" without spending $50,000 on a place I don't even want to go.

Teachers actually think we care

When I care, they don't think we care. When I care, they think we care. Then when we say we care, they don't care that we care because they think we don't care when we do care, yet when we tell them we don't care they insist we should care because of a bunch of reasons we're supposed to care about.

I'm deleting the word care from the dictionary. Thou shall not utter it.

I do care. For the public school system? Hell no.

This being said, getting some reward (as in more work, but at least you get to choose it & you get paid) for this would be nice, and my parents would skin me alive for getting a B-, nevermind dropping out. They already consider an 89 an unsatisfactory score.

The floor may work. People will usually try to remove the hundreds of obstacles lining their path and wonder "WTF is this?".

Unless the handbook is a page. Then the lockers work fine. OR the lockers and the floors and the doors and the desks...

Im sure if we were given a weekly salary based on our grades, we'd do better.

Indeed. I've always laughed at the asinine grade-payment simile.

Payment that cannot be exchanged for other goods is a damn useless payment, not to mention it is a self-negating concept.

Teachers actually think we care

I pride myself in having the patience to attend school every day I can. I don't step out of line, I don't (usually) act rude, and I don't put up a fight while I'm there.

But I don't care anymore. I don't work unless its convenient for me. I don't give a damn what my grades are or what teachers think of me. I've given up on convincing the sheep to open their eyes because I know the realization will dawn on them eventually, though there's nothing I can do for them right now.

I can only attack from outside. I'm trying to trick them into letting me out, and the only way to do that is not to care.

Public Service Announcement: First world problems are still problems.

RE: Teachers actually think we care

Biggest problem, in my opinion, lays in the fact that all grades are basically subjective. I had a math teacher who would frequently give me low grades in my math tests simply because he didn't like the fact I was using a formula other than that he gave us(Seeing as there is more than 1 way to solve an equation. We were doing pre-calculus).

RE: Teachers actually think we care

I dont remember what it was. But i remember there being 3 different ways of solving the equation(1 he taught us and 2 i found myself). His method took a lot longer and needlessely wasted time, yet he continually insisted we only use what he teaches us and nothing else. Its like being told to plow a modern farm field(the huge ones) with a wooden plow and an ox when you've got a freaking machine that can do the same in only 5% of the time.

When we asked why, he never gave a straight answer. Im surprised i made it through that class(im not actually. I "borrowed" homework answers from my friend and wrote irrelevant work on my test to prove my solution, which worked since he never really looked to see if the work was right but rather looked at length of the work. My friend, who was his favorite student in class, spent a year of handing in homework he simply made up some random work to fill thr page after finding the right answer. The teacher even praised him)

*any horrendous language mistakes stem from the fact im doing this from my phone. Not very good attyping on the phone. I got big thumbs*

I think that's a good point. Some kids care a lot about grades and being popular, how they look, if their teachers like them and so on. To relate to the students I teach I have to be sensitive to their concerns whatever they are because what they care about is what has the potential to cause them pain.

Apathy is a different animal. I don't mind if a kid is apathetic about his grades and school as long as he's not apathetic about himself and his future. I see all kinds of things, severe depression and despondency. Not many of my students have thought about school in an intelligent and critical way like a lot of you guys have.

It's also hard to deal with hostility. While I respect hostility I also, maybe unfairly, resent it when it's directed at me.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Teachers actually think we care

I'm apathetic to grades for as long as humans give them.

Hostility must be difficult. It happens often in my school as well, where students are hostile to a teacher for no logical reason. Funny enough, it's usually the students known to be bad behaving(We don't have any violent or hateful students or any of that sort. Just some students on the male side that are known for their trouble-making. Females in my school are the smarter ones, I'm just the only male exception Smile . All in my grade that is. The lower grades are horrifying. They try so hard to act like the people they see on those teen shows)

But rarely is a student's hostility really justified. To make things worse, one minute they complain the teacher gives too much work then when they get a new teacher they complain the new teacher doesn't give enough work. There's always something to complain about for them. Some of the stuff they also resent and direct at the teacher isn't even the teacher's fault but it's their job. They need to teach that curriculum and if the administration forces them to do it a certain way, that's how they have to do it. Unfortunately, we had some good teachers who were fired or left due to being sandwiched in between the admin and the students.
