RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hey, Im pretty pissed off. As much as I really do not care about my grades, aren't teachers not allowed to disclose that info without my permission?

It's against most school regulations. Report this teacher to an administrator, or (this is the superior alternative) employ massive insubordination.

Exaggerate the issue beyond proportions and wrack havoc?

Or just bother the teacher for the entire year by reminding the teacher every single day about making sure not to tell people your grade...every...single..day. Raise your hand and ask if the teacher intends to reveal your grade. Ask the teacher if its legal, every single day. Ask them why they did it, every single day.

Then come back and tell us when your teacher checks into a mental institute because of a nervous breakdown.

Teacher told students my grades

We had a teacher who organized us in our Spanish class by our grade. the Failures sat in the back row, the A+ sat in the front row.

I was one of the failures(I didn't really want to learn Spanish, and I still don't really want to learn Spanish). Of course it only lasted a day because the whole class reported her to the administration, then the parents started coming as well. She got fired very soon and we all celebrated because none of us really liked the lady any way.

It's funny because it plays grades completely straight. The people who get A+'s would continue to do so because they're in the spotlight, and the people who get F's would be satisfied with chilling in the back. If anything, the order should have been reversed to ensure everyone gets C's or something. (Still a terrible practice, though.)

People who want to sit in the front should be allowed to do so. Seating charts suck because sitting in the front helps you learn, at least it helps me learn. With a randomized seating chart, the people who want to be in front aren't necessarily in the front.

We usually have the right to choose our own seats but sometimes students fight over a desk(really? you're arguing over a damn desk you'll only sit in for 45 minutes?) or two students chatter non-stop when seated next to each other. Then the teacher changes all the seats.

I personally sit the front and as close to the door as possible. It seems to be a blind spot for teachers most of the time.

RE: Teacher told students my grades

If I did that and you reported me here's what what would happen:

Nothing.

If your mom called the school and complained about me this is what would happen:

Nothing

If your mom called the school three times, documented it, and then went to the district superintendent and reported it to him three separate times here's what might happen:

They call me into an office. They ask me if I announced your grades to the class. I ask for my union rep. The union rep has dirt on the superintendent and principal, of course. They ask again and I tell them I don't remember any incident like that ever occurring. They put a note in my file and the matter is dropped.

If your mom hires a lawyer and he's honest still nothing happens. If he's crooked then he starts digging through my public records that I'm legally obliged to keep about grades and discipline and whatever else. Finds where I'm lacking and tells your mom to sue the school district and me personally for negligence then I really start to regret not just apologizing to you right after it happened and I saw it annoyed you.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Indeed. I find it interesting that those who like to learn or do good in class, are put in the back of the class(It's been like that for me). Usually I'd have to talk with classmates to get a seat farther up(as in not behave and sit quietly). Such behavior didn't really damage my grade yet it put me in a position I liked better.

So what Cancer is saying is to just do it the true American way and sue.

I wouldn't care that much. If anybody laughs at you about them, point out that they are the ones conforming and you should be the one laughing.

RE: Teacher told students my grades

Under FERPA, it is not legal for your teacher to disclose your grades to anybody other than you and your parents. However, if you simply complain then nothing at all will get done about it. You could attempt to sue as TheCancer said, but that is a long and tedious route that's only worth it if you really are concerned about getting a little dough out of it.

It might help to hide a recording device in your pocket and then catch your teacher actually divulging your grades or the grades of another student.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

Man, how the law is radically different in Murrika.

In my home country, your grades are open source and no one gives a fuck. All the grades are recorded in the class gradebook, which can be freely accessed by any student from the class. Everyone knows what you have and it's just a fact of life no one concerns themselves with.

Different culture.

Teacher told students my grades

^That's a great system.

I say that 75% of what a student in my class talks about is his or her grade and how they're only 1 point or etc. away from some grade.(One kid will spend a week harassing teachers for that 1 single point). The other 25% are stuff I neither wish to know nor care to know.

I remember the times our teacher asked if we'd like to hear our grades out-loud and how some students would suffer anxiety because they were afraid people would learn of their 79 or 82 or whatever grade they had. Never bothered me, whether a 50 or a 0 or even a 100.
