RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

My prison is better than your prison! We get to make up gym class if we miss more then three days a marking period (whatever a marking period is). I have missed seven classes and my teacher expects me to make them up. I asked her what would happen if I chose not to and she told me that my grade would go down about 28 percentage points.

What the hell? I understand that Physical Education is a participation class (aside from the TESTS they give us) but I seriously can't help getting sick. Why should I be punished for something that I can't control?

Also, who would I go to if I wished to complain about this? I swear, even if I have to jump through hoops, this is going to be a policy that goes right out the window.

Threaten to sue, if in America. Even if it's not necessarily a totally sue-able case, the very idea of being dragged into court, with all it's fees and time consuming process, is usually frightening enough.

Litigation is an American's best friend. Let it be yours as well.

Strange. 28%. Not 25, or 30. What exactly do you do in gym class?

Depends on what gym class you pick (only the juniors and seniors can pick >.<). There's team sports (what the freshman and sophomores have to do regardless), individual sports so dancing, net games, swimming, advanced fitness (I don't know what that is) and weight training. I picked Individual sports so I could play tennis. I've always wanted to try it but I've never had anyone to play with.

So for "making up" your class, you need to play tennis with the wall?

Nah, I think I'd have to just come in and do what she tells me to. I never really cared enough to ask her what that meant.

Then do it. Do it with the least effort you can possibly muster up. Blame your inability to do much work on some health problem. (I can't run, I have a bad knee. I can't do push-ups, I've got a bad shoulder. I can't do sit-ups, I got a back problem. I can't use the racket, I've got a bad wrist etc.). Then, if she tries to force you or disregards your statement, you threaten to sue her and tell her she can't put your health at risk.

Get sent to the nurse? fake it. Not like they intend to give you an autopsy to check if what you say is true. Again, if they refuse to believe, threaten to sue.

It should work. Maybe. It depends on you. But when you see the opportunity, don't forget the power of litigation. Don't just threaten to sue, give a story about the entire process.
