RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Your Concept of God.

How do you visualize your God? Do you see him as one being? What religion is he tied to? Does he have a body, or doesn't he? Post down below.

I would like atheists to just entertain the thought of God, because "I think of God as a being that does not exist" is a bit too easy to explain. Or, you can try to make that thought more complex. Your choice.

I will chime in later.

One being...obviously gender-less but referred to as a he because English doesn't possess a neutral word.

Your Concept of God.

An indescribable, all-powerful entity comprised of three individual parts, none of which completely form the entity in question but all of which are. The definition, example, and most synonyms of the adjectives 'good', 'generous', and 'helpful'.

RE: Your Concept of God.

This is weird, but I think God is like a company. Let's use Walmart as an example. Is Walmart a tangible being? No. Walmart is comprised of people. Without people, Walmart would be nothing. Even though people have free will and don't like some of Walmart's practices, Walmart still does them, as if Walmart is a separate entity. Walmart has no physical form but still provides people with merchandise despite that. The bad employees of Walmart are also a part of Walmart, so Walmart Isn't entirely good.

That wasn't the best analogy, but I think it works well enough.

Your Concept of God.

God is the first cause of our reality. He is immortal and much more powerful than we are, able to bring an entire reality into existence. God is good, according to most definitions of the term. He is all knowing, or at least he knows a lot more than we do about everything. God also has an interest in human affairs and he communicates with man via prayer.

Your Concept of God.

Well, I'm an atheist, but if he were to exist:

I would imagine him a man since he is a god (female is a goddess).
He would be the first human type thing to ever live, a mutation from several different species mating, in a family tree.
He would be extremely lonely, being the only human on Earth, and commit suicide.

Since he died the most powerful thing on the planet (thought process, thumbs, wonders, etc.), he would gain lots of power in his death, becoming an extremely powerful spirit, making him a god.

As he watched over the Earth, he realized that none of the other animals were able to do all of the amazing things humans could do, so he created humans to develop life, have dreams, think and wonder, and help each other.

Soon the human race came to what it is today.

(By the way, I have never read the bible or anything, this to me is just quite logical, and how I would imagine such things to happen.)

As for the ten commandments, heaven and hell, etc.
That is just a bunch of mumbo jumbo

if gawd is "indescribable" then why are u describing him you hypocrite

anyways i think this is an accurate description by richard dawkins:

"the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."

or as the bible so blandly puts it: "a consuming fire, a jealous God."

Your Concept of God.

God created the universe but never communicated with humans. This can be evidenced by the fact that the universe makes sense, and religion doesn't. Therefore I believe in god, but not religion, if that makes any sense.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

I actually quite like this analogy. Never heard it described like this before ever, but it's an interesting perspective.

My concept of God is kinda similar. Like it's a part of everyone, and everyone is a part of it. Like we're all connected and stuff. And all the religions are based on this concept, but different cultures gave it different names and interpretations and whatnot. And now they fight over the details and call each other infidels.
