RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Thumbs Down British schooling system :/ (rant?)

I'm a year 11 in a school somewhere in England. It sucks, basically. It's probably no different to any other education system; teachers forcing kids around, making them feel so stressed and anxious about exams. I get punished and ridiculed for not giving two fucks about it. Punishments and extra work literally thrown at me. My mum thinks Im ruining my life but i get perfect grades without doing all this extra crap and work. Ive spent most of my life wearing a stupid uniform which carries school names. The puppet like teachers are often worse than the brainwashed pupils. They seem to think they have total authority over me and it drives me to insanity. I would give them a piece of my mind but i suffer from anxiety because of the bullying and crap ive received throughout my whole life because im somewhat different. They treat anyone who isnt an ass kisser like a problem and the teachers are just puppets who are completely controlled by the government. they teach me all the wrong shit and then they pick on me for leaving when i have had enough of their mind games and blackmail. so intimidating. It is like 1984 in that school; cameras everywhere, microphones everywhere, if you say a thing out of line you end up in detention or punishment of some kind. i have only a few months left here but i want to think about all of the other poor souls like me who have to go through this. im sick of this one size fits all system where i dont get a fucking choice and im treated like a 5 year old when they expect me to be like an adult. im classed as a problem child because i wont sell myself out for some poxy fucking letters saying that i have achieved so and so in a gcse. I fucking hate it. you get all them kids in africa and shit that really want an education but they dont even know what its like. its fucking slavery and ass kissing all the way until you leave and if you think any different you get fucking crucified for it. Most of us spend near enough our entire childhood sitting in a chair watching a screen and writing down useless numbers. for the masses its an easy task but i dont believe in that kind of shit i wish that i never went to school and was just unschooled. school has killed everything i once found interesting. the school is responsible for everything i do in the school day and i dont want that i want to have my rights and responsibilities i am not their fucking property and they can fuck off. power to the people.

Same here. I'm in Year 11 and the school's run by fascist middle-aged wankers who just came out of anger management.

My school just banned every drink that isn't the rat piss they sell. I, along with many others, do not listen to that rule in the slightest. No member of staff has noticed the bottles of Lucozade I've been taking into school every day.

And yes, my school is like 1984. There are cameras everywhere.

British schooling system :/ (rant?)

This is how your school should look the day after you celebrate your freedom from the tyranny.

My school was like that at one point. We felt like we were in the USSR under Stalin. It was quite funny actually, since you'd see students whisper complaints about the school then hush up when a teacher walked by.

Course the principal was only around for two years, and after he left, things got a lot better.(The Stalin-esque guy even tried to ban us from going to certain local stores nearby AFTERSCHOOL, you know, the period when we aren't under the rule of the school).

Those Nazi-like bastards are hard to take care of in my opinion. They always have something hidden up their sleeves to "persuade" your parents that you're just going through a certain period and that they'll do their best to help you. This practically makes whatever you tell your parents become meaningless because they refuse to believe anything you say or even show them, after a certain point.

Luckly my school has just recently entered the stage of cameras everywhere(only about two months of school left, not to mention I've missed an entire month, and still am missing, and it's been heavenly. It's nothing like a spring or winter or evens summer break when you know that while everyone else is stuck in an institution, you're out there enjoying your long awaited freedom).

We've also started to re-enter another dictatorial rule, which is obvious when the administration starts throwing out some vague and arbitrary rules. If you question the logic of these rules, they consider it as being rude or talking back to staff and slap on the suspension(Yes, Herr Fuhrer has decided that there is no such thing as detention or demerits in his new Reich. It's either "be good" or "SUSPENDED".). We get updates on our student login thing on students that get suspended and the reason(they give the ID number of the student, not the name. At least it's semi-private, though you can sort of guess who it may be because the ID number is given in order of enrollment. Those who enrolled later have higher numbers then the long-time students of 5-6 years). There has literally been 20 suspensions over a 2-3 week period for the vaguest of reasons. (One of the vaguest being "rude". A totally subjective reason...)

But like I said, it takes a good deal of force. Or you'll end up like the guy in 1984(remember Room 101?). You either do it V for Vendetta style(as seen in the picture) or you do it Gandhi style with non-violent disobedience(which requires a number of participants to be effective)

*If you choose to go with the picture version, DO NOT FORGET THE 1812 OVERTURE!. It is of utmost importance...*
