RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

I never liked titles....

I have been on this site for a month or so now but just finally decided to register for the forums. Mainly because I read everything I could find on the site... Skipping a lot of Q&A... I found this site in aggressive hopes of looking for clarity. Having read all the articles and so on I have used the information I have read to fight against my schools violent power.

In doing so I was suspended (I do not know the reasons why) and yelled at. I was calm and never raised my voice or hurt anyone or break anything. I was only suspended for two days but I over heard that I was suppose to be suspended for a whopping five days.

I have recently argued with students who were running for a student government thing at my school. Of course got yelled at by fans of one of them. How I see student elections:
Person who has a lot of friends: Hey I'm running for this, will you vote for me?
Friends: YEAH TOTES DUDE.

In a nutshell, that's how students at the school feel like they have power. I've told them why it's pointless because they haven't done a thing (literally).

Okay, sorry I tend to stray off topic. I still have no idea why I was suspended but I do know that I was accused of "Violent Behavior, in danger of harming others in designated lunch room" or some crap like that. Known fact: I haven't been in a school lunch room for years.

XD Okay! SO, why I am here is to get new knowledge, maybe a link to an article related to the subjects of this site or helpful hints, etc... I'm willing to read any information that I am shown (subject related of course).

Your's truly in schooling agony,
KSJ

Napoleon had the same problem. So he started a coup and declared himself god-emperor, or halfway did.

But you have anymore details? You got suspended for getting into an argument with some students over student government stuff(and they began yelling because their reptile mind didn't realize you were in an enclosed space and you were not that far away?).

I'd say you should have the world's least violent protests. I'd propose a sit-in. Just grab a seat somewhere, perhaps outside the principals door and just sit there the whole day. Block the entrance but don't make it impossible to get through(or your protest won't last that long. You want maximum exposure). Maybe make it so they have to step over you or something of that sort.

Art of Non-Violence. Study, Learn and Apply!

Don't even speak. No matter what. Even if they decide to suspend you, expell you, give you detention, DONT BUDGE OR SPEAK! Let them use force on you, let them drag you, let them call the police to handcuff you. Make sure you get this on video somehow or have some sort of witnesses(a hidden cam in a coat or something of that sort). Then hand it over to the media and follow up on their treatment of you aggressively.

Next thing you know, the whole school staff is stuttering stupidly because they don't know what to do.(Perhaps if you can get more students to join in for added strength).

Non-violence is KEY!(no matter how pro-chaos and revolutionary I am, it'd be unwise to disregard the powerful effect non-violence has)

Good luck! Popcorn

RE: I never liked titles....

Forgive me for I failed to say, I was suspended due to the Principal of my house (we call them houses at our school). They yelled and yelled and well, yelled. Them and the principal of another house yelled. I spoke my mind on an event that occurred that day. The principal of the other house told my friends and I and well 50 or so other students whom were very quiet and having conversations with their own groups to leave that houses cafeteria and basically never return. I went to that principals office and sat down and the following conversation took place:
Me: I just wanted to talk to you about the cafeteria incident this morning.
Principal of other house: What incident?
Me: You told my friends and I to leave due to security issues, I was just curious and wanted to know more.
Principal: No, I don't want to deal with you right now. Leave my office and mind your own business. Maybe you should talk to your housemaster, they can straighten your mind up.

After being sent to my housemasters office the following conversation took place (not all just the beginning)
My housemaster: Why are you here?
Me: I just went to talk to [name of other housemaster here] about a........
My housemaster: WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!

And well it went down hill from there. But I eventually started speaking about what I learned so far from this site. They of course were not winning so they decided to get louder and louder.

Eventually two school officers were called to escort me to our student crisis center. After I had walked out of my housemasters office saying the phrase "If you think I am wrong, try to prove yourself right. Have a nice day." Them chasing after me (I was walking, pretty relaxed I must add), and yelled at me to follow them. Now everyone in the class is staring, quite curious. I sat down at my desk and proceeded to read a book I had left on the desk.

To save you some time and confusion as to where I am going with this...
Ten minutes later I'm in the crisis center waiting for a pickup from a guardian. Of course to be yelled at by them. I surely hope I clarified everything in this.

Yeah... what kind of school is this, KSJ? How did they end up with those terms and structure?

I've collected huge numbers of links and references, if you want to learn more. I've been trying to figure out how to present them along the lines of a learner-centered class, or some kind of format that lets people dive in and explore.

My replies on this thread contain a bunch of links to check out:

Maybe We Should Start Something
http://forums.school-survival.net/showth...?tid=27899

This thread also features some good discussion of whether or not change is possible, and my reply there has more links to check out:

You can't change anything
http://forums.school-survival.net/showth...?tid=28546

There are definitely teachers and parents who can relate to the ideas discussed here. More and more educators are interested in ways to support students learning things relevant to life, and opening up the conversation about how education works with learners. That starkly contrasts with the "don't ask any questions" approach you describe at your school.

You might want to consider setting up a blog or writing guest posts about your quest to make sense of your situation.

Also, check out the student voice movement -- http://www.stuvoice.org/ -- that might be worth showing to people in your school. One thing to consider is what changes you're really looking to make.

I'm thinking about how to make a documentary series about learning and education. This sounds like it could make an interesting story.

Sorry, the incident was the other Housemaster kicking 50+ kids out of a cafeteria. Their words were "it's unsafe" but how they said it was basically let's put 4000 kids in one cafeteria, yeah, that'll be safer.

They told us that because that one cafeteria we were in didn't have a teacher in to watch us that it was unsafe and we could get hurt. Well, everyday a teacher does sit down and just does his work.

The other housemaster clearly didn't know about the other teacher and still told us to leave. Of course when they left we went back in and sat down. They didn't come back.

ADHD really makes me go off topic. I apologize.

It certainly sounds like one. It'd be odd for a normal school to have a "house" system.

Yes Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff are houses that the students get sorted into.
