RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I know they had classes but I didn't think anyone really cared much, unless they were into that magna(or is it manga)/hentai/anime stuff...

I dont have classes, I have work. I have work from 4 to 11pm four days a week with one 8am shift on Saturdays. Life is good.

For your information, I'm no hippie. I'm the worst kind of hippie. I'm a Jesus-fearing monk who also happens to be good with blackmail and technology. So, that answers that question.

That's a good picture, but I don't match that. I'm much more dangerous if you cross me in the wrong knots. You'll be cursing the day you ever crossed me. Fortunately, I'm not easy to irritate, but if you do, prepare for the ride of your life. Yeah, did I mention I'm a diehard right-winger of right-wingers. Seems rather strange that I'd support a cause such as school freedom, but here I am, regardless.

RE: What's your average school day like?

First class of the day is algebra 1 and I HATE algebra. It's a later class at 10:30 until 11:45. At 2 is my Linux systems administration class and an hour and a half after that is my science class. I'm the odd man out on all my classes because I run only Linux on my laptop. Everyone either uses a Mac or cheap Gateway compared to my Lenovo ThinkPad. I have those classes three times a week. Gotta love college.

What's your average school day like?

My first class of the day is Algebra II. It goes pretty quickly, I just hate how the teacher says "like" in the middle of sentences.
My second class of the day is English. We don't do anything so I do math homework or read.
Then I have Study Hall where I go to the Library or I have Choir. We sing. It's fun.
And then I have Art where my teacher is a raving lunatic with PE teacher syndrome or gym and the teacher ALSO with PE teacher syndrome. Mainly because she said she'll only let you miss one day of swimming due to menstruation. Sorry lady, but last time I checked, it lasts about a week. So you're out of luck there.
And then we have a 45 minute class that changes depending on the letter day. If I'm lucky, I get to go to Library Advisory Board, the club I'm in. Or I have to go to art, since I'm failing and the teacher signed me up to spend even more time where I really don't want to be. Or I have remediation since my school decided that if you suck at math you have to spend more time doing it. I wouldn't mind, except I'm NEVER going to use this math. Ever.

In short: It is hell. Thank you for asking!

What's your average school day like?

I get to school at 8:30. Classes start at 8:45, so I go to my first lesson. Three hours of dread later, it's lunchtime. I spend this in the library- the one decent facility my school has. Then two and a half hours later, I walk home.
Sometimes I have Science, English and History (the realm of the godly teachers) but every other lesson is a nightmare.
Assembly is every Wednesday in the atrium which is brilliant since I'm claustrophobic.

1st block is English and I get treated like a retard. 2nd block is Biochemistry and I get treated like an even bigger retard.

Then I have lunch and go to work at a tech school. Then go home.

Cool story, bro. Tell it again.

What's your average school day like?

I have to leave the house by 6:36am at the latest to catch the train, then I take a bus from the station, and school officially starts at 8:05am.
My academic day lasts maybe 4 hours, then there's about another 4 hours of conservatory classes.
I walk to the station, usually stop and buy a taco, and take the train back home and get back to my house by 6:45pm.

It's just chemicals.

What's your average school day like?

On a usual school day for me I wake up at 7:30 and have coffee and toast while watch the news. Do the usual boring stuff then wait for my brother to get ready and usually end up late because of him! Razz
Homeroom starts at 8:50. My teacher wants us to be active instead of all sitting in the classroom so we have to walk two laps of our oval while she marks the role. I don't mind doing this, she even lets us throw around a frisbee or an exercise ball which is pretty sweet.
Classes are all mixed up in the week here but I have History: Revolutions, English, Maths Methods, Hospitality Food And Bev, Psychology and Frees. Our stupid school ran out of lockers so my friend and I got dumped in the old locker bay which is further away from the main building and has the tiniest lockers ever! I can't fit all my stuff in there so we have to leave it out and people are always messing with it. >:(
Because of this my friend and I are ALWAYS late to first lesson and we can't leave early because of the laps. My teacher won't listen to reason and still threatens us with yard duty every time we are late.
History is something I love to learn at home when I do my note taking, but my teacher is just boring to listen to and I sit there waiting for it to end.
Maths is fun because I'm good at it and we only have a class of five.
Psychology is the best class because my teacher is the nicest woman and has the best methods of teaching. She never assigns homework and never checks our notes and I have all my friends with me.
English is the worst subject because they are all in doubles (each period goes for 50 minutes and there are six periods). It is the same teacher as my history teacher and I get so bored in these lessons. I just doodle in my book it's the only thing I can think of. I actually understand the saying 'bored to tears' in this class.
Hospitality is like a slacker class but the work is so hard if you don't get it done. We get to cook sometimes which is good and my teacher is so great but the work is killing me and its the main thing weighing me down right now (it's a year twelve subject). I can't quit because we won't get our money back and it cost $700 dollars excluding excursions costs coming up.

Hmm.

First half School day
1st period: American cultures 2. Boring, it's a co taught class, one of the teachers hates me.
2nd period: Study hall. I get work done. Mostly AC1 because it's what I have prior to this class.
3rd period: Language F: An adapted cirriculum English class for people that need extra help. I like this class.
4th period: Geometry. I love math and nice teacher. It's easy.
5th period: Biology. I admit I'm horrible at this class. Right now, I have a 85% though, so I'll attempt to keep it that way.
Second half Parkway career and technology center.

What's your average school day like?

We've been programmed in such a way that our lives remain absurdly simple. And many refuse to break this tradition or lack the courage to try it, knowing there is no safety net.(That's why drunks have more interesting lives. Their drunk minds forget the lack of a safety net and launch them right off the cliff without even realizing it. But I'm not saying you should be drunk, because it's only a false "hallucination" of a unique life, since you're more likely to do something stupid and get yourself killed...)

RE: What's your average school day like?

I'm unschooling (you could say, anyway) right now, but I feel like recounting the average school day at my last school (7th grade) anyway. You know, for posterity. And because I like writing. This is a pretty long post, so you might want to grab a sandwich or something tasty.

Hidden stuff:
The school was distinctly middle-class, situated close to the low-density housing that defined that part of the city and also the main hospital and a riverbank. It was a rather clean building with around 430 or so students last time I was there; had decent sporting facilities too.

I can't remember exactly when school started, but it was around 7:30 or 8 in the morning, after sunrise in the winter, which was good. We had to wait outside if it wasn't raining, but still. I should have walked to and from school more; I didn't live very far away. Razz

So I waked to my homeroom on the first floor, and my teacher was a pretty sarcastic guy let me tell you. Pledge of Allegiance, morning announcements, bantering with classmates and all that malarkey while I tried my best to stop yawning and clear the cotton from my head. I assume lack of sleep is a problem for most of those who will read this (and I feel your pain even still, believe me)

During the four quarters of the school year, we had different classes for select periods, and they were mixed up depending on what day of the week it was. For example we had PE two or three (can't remember exactly) days a week, and we had French for one quarter, Music the other, etc. (My music teachers thorough the years were pretty vindictive.) I placed a schedule in my binder and eventually had it memorized. Since I had PE for first period on Thursdays(which I did not look forward to), let's pretend this is Thursday. Because why the fuck not?

After unplugging our government-issue MacBooks from the computer rack and putting them in our case, we head off to PE (or gym, whichever you prefer calling it). We put our laptops on a rack in the hallway, then change in the locker room and...well, PE was actually pretty alright in retrospect. We had to stretch before our physical exertion, yes (which has been proven unhelpful), but we played a variety of sports (I scored the winning goal in the field hockey championship and I put practically nil effort into my play) and while there was some jock-like activity it didn't get too out of hand. I didn't like square dancing too much though(no matter how much I fantasized about being the Engineer at the school dance even if they'd suspend me for taking any sort of wrench whatsoever inside the building). Gym teachers were okay, as far as I can recall.

To be honest I can't remember what classes I may have had for second period. I don't have any reference material either; I don't feel like venturing onto the school's website and I set fire to my binder around 2010. I do recall a number of classes I may or may not have had before lunch: Study Hall where a middle-aged woman attempted to act concerned about our futures while we hung out with our friends; Writing class which I genuinely enjoyed and had a good teacher in (she's retired now, naturally) even if my writing was hampered by the pressure I was feeling as a public education student and was also not as good as now; and Science with the aforementioned sarcastic teacher, which was so-so.

Lunch consisted of a dedicated lunch room (which also served as the back door entrance foyer and had nice ceramic tile patterns); it could hold everyone in a certain grade but not all the grades at once. My lunch was probably around 11; and while there was hot lunch and ala carte I always got the same thing at ala carte (expensive and unhealthy, yes I had problems). By now I was pretty good at moving fast and beating the long lines, thanks in part to the proximity of some classes. I then sat with some of my closer friends and shot the shit(you could say we were nerds/outcasts); if it was a nice day out we may have been able to relax outside a bit.

After lunch was Reading. I hated Reading. The teacher was a straight up bitch, I always felt drowsy as hell (and said teacher hated nappers), and I really resented being made to read books, mostly about Arctic survivalism and such. Don't forget administrative detentions for trivial shit (and administrative detention naturally was hosted in her classroom after hours, I got to know it very well after a bit and while it wasn't too bad it was the principle of the thing that really irked me).

Next was, I think, the rotational class (French one quarter of the school year, Music the next, etc).

French was good, the teacher was pretty decent and the subject material was interesting (I should learn French and Spanish too come to think). Wasn't really set on it though; I had lots of other stuff on my plate and the teacher was adamant that homework be dome at home anyway.

Music, while somewhat enjoyable, had an offbeat teacher that was cool sometimes, rather unpleasant some other times. I never really had much of a talent for music, anyway. I did enjoy some of the terribad presentations some of my classmates did on the different types of musical instruments once.

Art was weird; the teacher wasn't very good and the curriculum was typical "make what we tell you" interspersed with the occasional boring documentary. I didn't have much of a talent for art back then either, although I am sort of interested in drawing now and if I had the chance to relive it again I'd probably be as subversive as I could be. There were lots of surreal moments waiting after the classwork had been finished but before the final period began.

I can't remember what the fourth rotational class was. It MIGHT have been Study Hall, but I'm not sure. Spanish was the fourth class in the 6th grade, but I don't think I had it in the 7th grade. Spanish was pretty fun; the teacher was pretty okay (he's also retired now) but I heard that AP Spanish was serious and hardcore, as was AP French.

The last period of a typical Thursday (remember that the schedules varied on each day of the week) was Math, taught by a rather old woman on a rather old-looking classroom. I'm not too mathematically inclined, and the assignments ranged from dreary to somewhat interesting. There was an assignment we once did where we had to drive a car of our choice between 26 towns, one for each letter of the alphabet, and determine the distance and total cost of the trip. I drove an M1 Abrams tank. I calculated my expenses as around 500 dollars; I may have been wrong.

I rarely went home at 2:30 PM (the time school got out). I usually stayed in the library until 4 (when all remaining students have to go home) to get HOMEwork done and hang with friends. Due to my talent at pissing off The Man, I sometimes had detention, which actually got out about 25 minutes earlier. No laptop usage though.

In retrospect, the pressures and principles of the whole thing (and me feeling increasingly alone and embittered) caused me to crack and request homeschooling near the end of the school year. I was pretty disillusioned with the whole education by then, and I spent most of the following summer browsing the internet not knowing what to do. Then I had to move away in the early Fall, leading to an experience that, while painful, helped me find and define myself as a person and what I want to do with my life. Don't worry, it involves a GED, personal responsibility and hopefully college. But that's a different story.

Goddamn what a lot of typing I just did.

What's your average school day like?

You call that a lot? I write that much just to warm up...

Things tend to get better once you figure out what the hell you plan on doing. I for one felt relief after spending a 2 month "vacation" from school, which gave me time to think without the interruption and pressure one gets from that horrid institution known as school. Plus, I literally found the last piece of the puzzle on the flight back to the US(Let's say I was sitting it in my possible work-zone).

My observations have shown me that the time spent in school really detracts a person from being able to plan and prepare, leaving them vulnerable and confused(and thus perfectly suited for the school administration ready to devour you whole)

One of my other goals is to make this forum a bit of my own class...So, tell me, how you feel about the new rule of having you do homework? Or you get another warning. So, do you want to do this or not?...Please send a PM and tell me if you're willing or not. I will probably give you 24 hours to send the PM. No PM will indicate to me that, no, you don't want to do things in this new way. So, you will be saying goodbye."

Rainbow RE: What's your average school day like?

Being woken up by that nasty little shit of alarm clock at 5:45, hiding under my sheets until 6:00, getting up with the motivation and speed of a dead sloth. Getting dressed, making coffee, packing lunch, drinking coffee, dropping on the floor, getting up, realizing I'll have to run in order to catch the train AGAIN, speed teeth brushing, running, train is late, laughing at myself...
From either 7:55 am to 3:00 pm or 7:55 am to 4:30 pm:
I hate life.
School is wrong.
Are you kidding me?
Should I correct that teacher... nah, well, maybe I will...
How many mistakes will that "intellectual" have to make until the others recognize something.
I woke up at 5:45 for THIS?
Wow, that was today's 14th sexist comment. -_-
Yes, I already know that I have no future and will sleep on the pavement in your eyes.
I'll find myself a circus to run away with... wait, I can't even juggle...fuck.
Kill me.
15 minutes until freedom...
20 seconds...
Bouncey
Goingcrazy
Banana

Driving home...
FREEDOM. Buttrock
oh there is still homework to do...
procrastinating... still procrastinating... 11:49, maybe I should start doing something... fuck this shit.

What's your average school day like?

Before, when I actually went:
-Be woken up by the screams of my mother
-fuck my life
-take shower and ass around my house
-get kicked out of house by older brother
-take bus to school
-walk into school and get stared at
-sit down for a few hours
-read or sometimes do work just so teachers wouldn't bug me
-eat delicious homemade lunch
-more sitting
-about to stab myself in the head with a pencil
-hometime

But that was before I secretly dropped out. Now my average day is:
-feel slightly better about waking up
-take shower
-go on computer (unless brother is up)
-leave at about 11 am
-go for a walk
-take bus to library, cousins, friends house or any combination of the three
-go home

What's your average school day like?

Starting recently:
1st Period:45 minutes of nothing
2nd Period:45 minutues of possibly physics(we have 3 teachers. 1 is the main teacher and 2 subs that alternate if the main teacher isn't here, though the subs are also educated in physics and able to teach. Usually if main or 1 of the subs, I can slack off)
3rd Period:"reading" class. Do nothing. Usually class socialize(only period where our entire class meets)
4th Period:Self-Study till AP Euro test, After that it's free
5th Period:Self-Study till AP English Language test. Free afterwards
Lunch-Go home, eat lunch, watch TV
6th Period:Spanish. Don't really do much but socialize or present projects unrelated to spanish to "act" like we do work. Our Spanish teacher is a pretty good teacher, gives us lots of free time and supports us since she knows the 12th grade will probably not learn a single thing in spanish for the last year.

I basically have no reason to come to school in about a week or so.
