RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

I have thought about this ever since like 7th grade. Is it possible to do well in school all year round (which I am), but then get a bad grade on finals and then end up failing the school year? Does anybody know how this works?

Probably, since the finals have a pretty high "weight" in grades. It will probably depend on your school.

I'm pretty much against finals for two opposite reasons 1)If I do good all-year but fail the test, is that a fair analysis of whether I actually learned or not or is it the teacher's fault for being a dumb prick 2)If I don't do shit all year yet ace my final, does that mean I really learned or I'm just a wise-ass that knew that studying for the final took, on average, less time then actually learning. Those are my two odd view points...

I'm personally the type of person that won't do well all-year round yet ace every important test(along with the finals).

Don't fail the finals and you won't find out.

It's okay for me to fail my maths final, because my year grade is above 2(lowest), so I'm fine and I'll pass either way, even if I stop studying right now. But it's not something I plan to do...

RE: If you do well all year but do bad on finals, can you end up failing?

If I punch in 59 on my computer the kid fails; if I punch in 60 he passes. Some districts limit the teachers' power by not letting students pass unless they also pass some kind of district exam. However, I've never heard of it to work in the kids' favor. Like the teacher CAN'T fail them if they pass the exam. That would actually make sense.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

I dislike leaving it up to teachers. My math teacher purposefully gave me 70s on all my work, when I was 100% correct. He didn't like the fact I was doing my work another way that he hadn't taught(yet worked and was a lot simpler than the uselessly complicated shit he was giving us). I managed to pass that class by cheating from the student the teacher considered the best in the class and his favorite(who was also my friend with who I had an on-going deal. Math cheating for me in return for history cheating for him.)

Example of how a teacher turns a good student into a cheater.

I like when students cheat. I think learning to help each other and sharing is more important than the assessments. I'm surprised they even care enough to cheat, to be honest.

Cheating is a wise capitalistic enterprise. Those who help cheat in return for money actually earn something. If you do someone else's work for money, it's like studying AND being PAID to do it. Especially if it's the same work.

Reason why I'd gladly help with your work, if your in the same class as me for the same homework especially, in return for payment. I learn, I get paid, you get your grade and everybody leaves happy.

Unless you got straight zeros it wouldnt end you. You could drop from like an A to a C, mabey a D. Some classes might have a minimum requirement though.

Whilst some work diligently there are those who ask why. I am one of them

The combination of these two ideas makes cheaters the good guys. And to think, two years ago, I would have chosen the socialist side.

Get rid of forced homework and you've just destroyed a portion of the Cheater's Black Market.

Tests tend to be a bit on the harder side and thus, will cost more.(plus there's more danger of getting caught, especially if the student who is a dolt manages to get a passing grade all of a sudden)

Don't even ask. Finals are the POINT of school.

In America that is.

And I heard that some of the smarter folks in the education system of decided that finals are actually not that great...
