RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

33 year old posting here... school is worse than you thought

So... I'm 33 years old.

I'm a professional software developer and I've been doing it, for... 17 years now.

I learnt software development, by myself... from the community or reading books, but mostly through experimentation and practice Smile

And... yeah... school has been a major issue. I've invented some incredible things in my time. Unfortunately, I got some bad reactions to the amazing things I invented. But the worst reactions have ALWAYS been from ... guess who?

UNIVERSITY EDUCATED TYPES.

From that experience, of university people lying about my work, I've learnt that school doesn't get better when you are older, it just selects those who are more evil.

The more people were part of the University education system, the more abusive they were to my work, they lied more, and they tried to destroy my self-esteem, and stop me from finding a way to be successful in life.

And guess what? They did this, by... lying really. Not just lying about me, but even lying about the fundamental principles of computer programming. Basically, getting their own subject wrong, just to "prove me wrong".

This basically wasted about 8 years of my life. While I was arguing with them, because I was TRYING to explain how they were wrong... I was telling them the truth about the code and how it worked. Guess what? THEY LEARNT FROM THAT, and IMPROVED THEIR CODE.

But never thanked me for it. In fact, they just gave more abuse, and pretended they hadn't learnt anything from me. Thus creating a cycle where they always learn from me, and I always get abused... they can progress in life, and I can't progress in life.

Like I said, I think those "University lovers" wasted about 8 years of my life.

And that's after the school system wasted many years of my life.

I think this site is in the right direction, but it doesn't just go far enough.

School doesn't just suck.

School is basically everything that is wrong about society. The biggest evil in society is school.

...

I have so many stories to tell. Adult stories. I know everyone here has stories, but... well I am 33, so it is a kind of "reinforcement" for you, that the issues about school don't just "go away".

School doesn't just suck. The school system must be destroyed. Simply, destroyed. It has no right to exist.

Not destroyed by attacking it, but destroyed by refusing to take part in it. And even better, refusing to allow others to feel good about having "accomplished" anything in school.

School isn't just a physical place, with walls and a teacher, and a curriculum.

School is a principle of life, reversed. I'll explain more about this, later.

Wow, what kind of crazy place do you live in? I don't think most university-educated people are like that...

EDIT: OK, so I read your other thread, and take it these people were all online in newsgroup-type things, yes? That makes more sense. I've also come across a lot of arrogant elitists online. They're everywhere and tend to roam in groups. Avoid like the plague! Razz

Thank you! I'm still here, because y'know, I'm needed as an 'young adult'. I'm 22. You're need more than I. Still, people will always claim that "young whippersnappers" don't know anything. Quick, someone get Jiroemon Kimura on our side

If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.
