RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Asked my teacher a question

So in english, we were assigned an essay on persuading readers. My teacher said either we pick the topics she picked or we ask her afterclass about the topic we want to do. I have her last period btw.

So I went up to her after class and asked her if I could persuade that school isn't required. She told me, "Well, there's nothing to debate about, school is mandantory." I was pretty shocked at this, I mean isn't the assignment about persuading others? I don't see why school being mandantory or not would really effect the essay.

Then I asked, "Well, what about if I could persuade others that they don't need college to live a good life?"

She respond, "Well then, there wouldn't be much debate. If you go to college, you get a good job. If you don't go to college, you end up working at a fast food joint."

At this point I wanted to argue back, which was exactly what I did.

I said, "What about Bill Gates? He was a college drop out. Steve Jobs? College drop out also. Going to college is expensive, and for some reason, the government keeps spending money on student loans that obviously aren't gonna get paid because of the miniscule amount of jobs there are here. What if I took all my college savings and started a buisness? All I need to know can be learned in the library or online and get some permits. And don't tell me you need some paper you get after four years of college. Because that doesn't mean crap. If I started a small buisness, I'd create more jobs, I'd actually help the economy. But nope, society today expects high school graduates to go to college because it will "guarantee" them a good job. Maybe that would've applied 20 or 30 years ago, but not now. Instead of wasting time on more useless education everyone forgets, use that time and money to make buisness, create jobs, help the economy."

My teacher stared at me for about 10 seconds and sent me to the office. Afterschool. I didn't go. And I'll probably write up the essay on college isn't required and hopefully snap reality into her head.

One of my other goals is to make this forum a bit of my own class...So, tell me, how you feel about the new rule of having you do homework? Or you get another warning. So, do you want to do this or not?...Please send a PM and tell me if you're willing or not. I will probably give you 24 hours to send the PM. No PM will indicate to me that, no, you don't want to do things in this new way. So, you will be saying goodbye."

btw, you could use Einstein as a loose example. He had a different brain than us, but he still flunked out of math even though he could have done all the work and then taught the class

It means the teacher was stumped and being the unenlightened animal specie she is, she tried to get rid of the source of her problem by sending to the next-in-line.

Asked my teacher a question

Wow, given all the recent press about college, having such a black-and-white attitude about it is crazy. Especially sending you to the office for participating in an assignment option she provided!

This article sums up a lot of the "question college" message coming from various people:

Saying No To College

And here's a related video that parallels the argument you made to your teacher:

Finally, to cover the alternatives to school side of things, consider this interview:

Maybe write the paper anyway and see if you can get credit for it. Smile You can always use it for a portfolio piece or a blog post, or submit it for publication. Those are all some of the paths, with or without college, to get a job or clients.
