RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Applied for a job

I asked for an application form, filled it out, gave it back to the manager, and all is well.

The job is at a pizza shop and pay isn't going to be amazing but they didn't ask for my grades. I don't care if I haven't graduated, taken the SATs, etc. They didn't ask for, mention, or probably even think of grades.

Please, adults, tell me more about how important they are Sleep

lol

I have never been asked to provide proof of high school completion. I have never been asked for my high school grades.

No one in the "real world" cares about high school.

That's a relief, but I have a sinking feeling that the principle only applies to entry-level jobs.

Nah, I promise you, NOBODY will ask you about your high school diploma or your grades, or anything. Seriously, I dunno how old you guys are, but all adults (inc. employers) secretly know high school is a joke.

They only want to know about: prior training, prior job experience, college education (if it's relevant to the job).

During interviews, they will not ask you a single question about high school. I've had several job interviews. I have never, ever, been asked about anything related to school.

One caveat: on job applications it may ask you, "Do you have a high school diploma or equivalent?" Even if you drop out, you can just lie and say yes. They may or may not verify that information. If they do some kind of background check and check if you actually have a high school diploma/certificate, well, you just won't get hired. It's not like they'll call the police, just apply for another job.

Seriously, fuck high school. Leave that bullshit lololol.

Well, it's good to know that opportunity is not denied to those who don't suck up to the state.

RE: Applied for a job

I believe this is how they want you to think it goes:

Employer: Do you have a high school diploma? Did you do your homework, take enriching extracurriculars, and do well on your standardized exams?

You: No, but I have a strong drive and work ethic and can be trusted with money.

Employer: Sorry, can't do anything for you.

Whereas it really goes like this:

Employer: Am I going to get in trouble for letting you work here?

You: I'm legal.

Employer: Are you going to steal my shit?

You: Nope.

Employer: Can you get here on time for any given schedule between x and y?

You: I might have trouble with that because I live eighty-nine furlongs away and the bus doesn't quite go out to that area and blah blah blah. (Hint: You just say yes and make it work.)

Employer: I'm not sure this will be a good fit.

You: But I have a diploma! Straight As! I scored top in the state on the Texas Assessment of Regurgitational Aptitude! They said this would make everything okay.

Employer: . . . We'll call you.

Applied for a job

The only time anyone ever asked about high school grades was when I was applying to college. They weren't really picky about it though.

And I didn't end up using the college stuff to get a job in the end. Or get any kind of normal job ever... nor do I want one.

RE: Applied for a job

I think that the only reason that grades exist is so that they can figure out what horribly trivial and boring class to put you in next. Other than that, it's just whether you graduated HS or not, which is a cruddy standard too.

Applied for a job

Pssh when I was interviewed for a job at the movie theater, they never asked me about grades or school in general. I think on the application all I had to fill out was that I was still in school. Nothing more. Hired me in an instant, and I even managed to botch the interview horrifically.

Applied for a job

In college, my scholarship was heavily dependent on the grades I made in high school, and I have to keep a certain GPA in college to keep my scholarship. While that isn't a job, it is an instance where grades are pretty important.

When you're applying for a low skill job, your grades don't matter. If you're gotten as far in school as you have, you probably have most (probably all) of the skills you need to perform the job or learn to perform the job. However, the higher the skill level required for a job, the more likely your experience and achievements (although not necessarily grades) will matter.
