RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Things you did in school.

What bad things did you do in school when a member of staff caught you doing it but you got off scot-free?

Also, what is the dumbest reason you ever got a detention?

---

1. Year 11 - I was pissed off, so I walked somewhere and some teacher with chopsticks in her hair shouted at me. I then walked over a table and gave her the middle finger (while she was watching) and then I bunked my Statistics lesson.

2. Year 7 - Me and a girl had an argument, and the sexist head of year (who is a woman) threatened me with suspension.

Sophmore - I once went up to one of my teachers(who was bald) during the middle of a test, and rubbed his bald head saying that it was my good luck charm. He was too shocked to do anything once I sat back down to fail my test.

7th - I got a 2 day suspension for my camera going off randomly in the locker room. I was accused of trying to creat kiddie porn, even though I wasn't holding the camera when it went off, it was in my locker, and it took a picture of the wall in front of it.

Things you did in school.

I once played Fire Water Burn by Bloodhound Gang over the speakers in a church during some school event thing. "The roof is on fire, we don't need no water, let the motherfucker burn"... Laugh

Well, it was an accident. I just brought a CD that had that song on it, and someone else put it in the CD player. I didn't get to it in time to switch it off, so I went to hide. Razz

Still, it was pretty funny when the church staff were freaking out. Nothing else happened though.

Things you did in school.

I did a lot of things. I can't really remember them at the moment, I'm feeling pretty lethargic(or just plain brain-lazy).

I've never actually been caught doing any of the not-so-right things. The worst punishment I've gotten was a single detention that was forgotten(I guess they didn't file it or something. Some luck).

We used to have some horrific thing called lunch detention for about two years. It was basically getting shoved into a room for all of our lunch recess, getting only getting ten minutes to have our lunch. To make it worse, teachers have free rein to hand out this detention for whatever reason they wanted. Considering the fact that I have issues with homework, I got it almost every single day. Probably the only benefit, and disadvantage, was that it wasn't an official punishment recorded anywhere.

(I attended a private school btw, from middle school to high school, in case some of these things sound unorthodox compared to the public school system)

RE: Things you did in school.

Walking off campus for a cigarette during lunch. The next day one of the campus monitors pulled me aside at lunch and asked me if I had walked off yesterday, I told her the truth. Then she asked if I smoked, I nearly fell over. I decided she knew already, no point in lying so I admitted that as well and had pretty much resigned myself to a referral and some sort of smoking secession program when she says "okay, thank you for not smoking at school but please don't leave campus anymore, get some nicotine patches or something" and walked off.
I'm not one for following rules but I was a good kid until graduation and kept my ass on campus.

Things you did in school.

7th grade- I didn't complete this stupid fossils worksheet so I had to go to working lunch(Working lunch is this thing during lunch where you work on your forced to do your work and you can't leave to chat with your friends). Anyway I worked on it and it was easy. The teacher was about to let me out even though it was against the rules and the science teacher walked in. Then I couldn't go to escape to lunch.

Things you did in school.

By "forced to do your work", do they actually supervise you or is it in the sense I can pull out my English worksheet then just dumbly stare at it while simply acting like I'm preparing to do work?

This lady supervises you. I don't remember if she actually pays attention though because I've only been there once this year.

Things you did in school.

We've got a class called "Independent Reading"(AKA the "BS-waste of time" period) where all students are forced to read books. My main resistance rose from the fact that I probably read more books than all the students combined(I think there are about 300 or so students. Small private school...) yet I'm still being forced to read. We also get graded in this period and are even given credits for it(more credits than our foreign language course).

The seniors don't read obviously. We've already applied to our colleges, most of us have gotten acceptance from at least one or two colleges, and no body gives a damn. Our teacher also is somewhat lacking in the English language and pretty relaxed(other teachers require absolute silence and even make the students write book reports, take reading tests and list unknown vocabulary). My close friend always has some political or philosophical discussion with me(He's a libertarian and I'm currently acting as a National Liberal Communist Conservative Totalitarian). The teacher never gives us a low grade even though we talk simply because we're holding books in our hands...

I would probably read if I was in that class except if there were friends in my class. Then, I'd probably be tempted to talk to them. Plus I read at night to help me sleep.

Things you did in school.

I've run out of books to read at home. I read last year though(finished Atlas Shrugged, though the 60 page monologue towards the end took me a week to comprehensibly read, since every time I tried to read through it, I fell asleep half-way. Finished two other Ayn Rand books as well.)

Now getting free books shipped to my house automatically from the Strategic Studies Institute. I have somewhat strange interests when compared to my peers. However, I use this period more to do the homework I didn't do at home. My planning for homework is planning which classes to do my work in on the same day its due Biggrin

I save homework until the day before it's due. Plus I got a lot of books from my dad's friend. Mostly fantasy books.

Things you did in school.

I've recently entered the fantasy realm of books(though I'm not new to fantasy).

It just occured to me one thing we used to do at my school. Teachers usually printed their tests the day before it was to be given and left them in school(though some were smart and took them home). My friends and I would stay afterschool for a while, out of sight, then enter the teacher's room(which we would ensure was accessible) to take the tests.

I never cheated, though I was an accomplice(I make a good look-out since no one ever suspects I'm up to no good). I don't cheat myself but I'm not against cheating for others, as in I would do other people's homework for money. It just reinforces what I'm learning and I make money on the side(I promote intrinsic motivation but external motivation is not all that bad).

Funny part was that my friends were caught and punished but I was never suspected. It's nice to be the student adults and teachers assume to be good, since you'll almost always be beyond suspicion.

I help my friends copy but I never cheat either and no one suspects me of doing something like that(But I never make money). Plus, one of my friends are like that to and she had to copy from me once.

Things you did in school.

Everybody wants to cheat off of me, though I naturally tend to cover up my tests.

Once a friend sitting in front of me turned around during the test(I had finished), grabbed my paper off my desk and began to copy down the answers. First I was shockingly surprised, then I was jabbing him with my finger and asking him if he was out of his damn mind. Luckily he returned my paper nearly a second before the teacher turned back.

Afterwards, I threatened to cut him off from cheating/copying from me(later in the year, he copied from my homework word for word, which the teacher caught and reprimanded us. I proceeded to strangle him after class. Biggrin)

Things you did in school.

One time in Spanish, me and the whole back row would tap our feet as loud as possible until she turned around. One day, she just flipped shit and started screaming and shoved a desk, her face turned bright red. No one got caught, was funny as hell.

Not much else worth telling, mostly stupid shit.

Second best was I finished an essay due 1st period in the morning, came to class 5 minutes late, waited till the teacher turned his back, and I fucking ran and jumped into my chair. He didn't even realize, felt like a ninja.

Things you did in school.

I once tried to climb the school fence. My jean got stuck on those goddamned barbs(pants got stuck from the mid-shin). I was basically hanging 12 feet off the ground upside down while my friends unhooked him. Got a nasty cut across my leg. Good thing there wasn't really anyone else around.

My friends "broke" into school a couple of times, sometimes I was with them. We never got caught, though recently two of them got caught and were suspended a day(they just went to return the calculators they borrowed for the SAT. Unfortunately for them, the administration decided to have there meeting at that very moment).

Lots of good stuff(and dumb).

Things you did in school.

I flirt with my math teacher and always get away with it.

I don't remember the dumbest reason I got a detention, but I remember cases where I have been punished (or was about to be punished) for dumb reasons.

1. I once got a C1 (1 negative point) in Art because a horrible girl called me a nigger, even though I'm white and when I told the teacher, she told me to say the N word because she didn't know it and I did as I was told, so I got a C1. She later removed it only because it was nearly Christmas.

2. In September, I got a C2 (2 Negative Points and a sanction) in English because stupid monkeys (a.k.a. classmates) won't line up properly and one of the boys pushed another boy on me and my English teacher gave me a C2 for screaming. The same incident happened a month later, but instead of getting a C2 from my English teacher, I was saved by two English teachers who don't teach me.

3. Last month, my Pastoral Leader tried to permanently exclude me from school for hugging my Form Tutor during Circle Time, but didn't want to tell me that it's for hugging my Form Tutor. She wanted me to tell her that I did it, even though I didn't know what she was talking about. She just asked me what I did in Circle Time that has nothing to do with fighting with a boy from 9Red or calling him a stupid Year 10 student. Next day I was told to go to my Directour of Learning and it turned out that I hugged my Form Tutor. Yes, now I know she doesn't like being hugged, but I should only get told off for hugging her and not excluded.

Things you did in school.

I got caught with cell phones and books a lot; mostly b/c I read them during class. I ditched quite a bit, but as I was discreet and just left school and went somewhere else, I didn't get caught much. And then there was not turning homework and projects...a problem which still persists today.

I decided she knew already, no point in lying so I admitted that as well and had pretty much resigned myself to a referral and some sort of smoking secession program when she says "okay, thank you for not smoking at school but please don't leave campus anymore, get some nicotine patches or something" and walked off.

Things you did in school.

I started skipping classes and not doing assignments during my last few weeks. Then, I just stopped giving a shit altogether after my mom said I could home school soon. Out of joy, I stopped doing anything and skipped any classes I didn't feel like being in.

Things you did in school.

I once failed to do my Macbeth homework and my English teacher didn't punish me.

In Year 7 I got into trouble for talking to a student on my way from the canteen to the Learning Support. Now I am allowed to talk to other students on my way to the Learning Support, but back in Year 7 I wasn't.

Things you did in school.

Shakespeare is actually very enjoyable once you forget all the bullshit they do with him at school and all; school ruins art that way, that's why I have trouble reading. There is a very famous quote from MacBeth that goes like: "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes."

And I whisper that whenever I see my English or Maths teacher coming to class.

Edit: couldn't get quote exactly right for the life of me. Fixed now.

"Then it was straight to the 40 ouncers/ slapping teachers and jacking off in front of my counselors." As the World Turns - Eminem.

"A man is a success if gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between does whatever he does what he wants to do." - Bob Dylan.

"A good artist should be isolated. If he isn't isolated, something is wrong." - Orson Welles.

"That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange eons, even death may die." - H.P. Lovecraft.

"I became insane, with long intervals of painful sanity." Edgar Allan Poe.

I got into a few fights back then... also I managed to troll the entire high school leadership as well and I actually ended up on top.
