RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I have a strong feeling that, nobody on earth would take free time that they have to learn Algebra. I'm so sick of people thinking I am worthless because I have no interest in it, I fucking hate it.

RE: Would you ever have taken time outside of school to learn Algebra?

I would have, and I'd have learned it much more quickly than I learned it in school. I love math. Somebody isn't worthless just because they don't care for Algebra though. There's many more interesting subjects out there to educate yourself on.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

I should have made it clear, I also don't think anyone is stupid for loving math, not at all. It's just not for me, and I hate having it forced down my throat when I gave up a very long time ago. It's more of algebra that I don't like, I of course would have learned basic math and stuff.

What's algebra again?

* SoulRiser Googles it

Oh, that shit with x and y and whatever. Yes, I would have learned this as soon as I started dabbling in programming. But it'd probably just be a side effect of learning programming, which, incidentally, is still the only use I've ever had for it.

RE: Would you ever have taken time outside of school to learn Algebra?

I've never really even had to know any algebra for programming... I guess some of the stuff can be considered algebra but you don't really have to study algebra to figure out how to do it...

meh, maybe I'll need it more in advanced programming classes or some shit.

I guess I've never really thought of it as algebra while using it... more like just using normal programming features, like variables, in calculations and stuff.

RE: Would you ever have taken time outside of school to learn Algebra?

I'm always doing algebra outside of school. I like to help my sisters and my cousin with their math homework. I really really really like math. Course that just may be because since having the worst math teacher ever, and dealing with skipping school a lot I'm taking algebra 1 for the THIRD time. I should be in pre-calc T-T

See, the thing is in real life, what we learn isn't divided into neat little subjects. Take, for example, doing genetic punnet squares. It's biology, right? Well, yes, it's simplified biology, it's also probabilities and English though. Heck, this discussion is English...it's reading.

Exactly, what Trekkie said. Half of these subjects wouldn't even have names if it wasn't for school. They'd just be a regular part of life that nobody even thought to group together.

RE: Would you ever have taken time outside of school to learn Algebra?

See why I like deliverables, guys? It can prove several things at once. Let's say your assignment is to make a poster about...oh, I don't know, saving the earth. It requires you to think about presentation (choosing colours, white space), computer skills or fine motor skills depending on whether you did it by hand or on the computer, spelling (because if your words are spelt so wrongly as to be unrecognisable...what's the point?), selecting pictures (if you did it on the computer) and more, depending on how you did.

If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.

I would definitely would have learned algebra on my own. I have a large interest in physics and physics has algebra.

I probably would have learned it mostly as part of the path to learning calculus.

Not really.....Unless I needed to know something for a program.
