RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

"implied rules"

so...

If a teacher does not specifically ban something in their room (since teachers like to have their own rules that you have to follow along with school rules) are you allowed to do it?

Today I was told by my study hall teacher that he never said we could listen to music on our laptops, I'm not gonna fight him on it because this teacher is one of the few who i've had that is pretty closed-minded to reason. But i did think to myself "you never said we weren't allowed to either." So the only question I have is:

Since the teacher didn't say anything about it, is it allowed if it isn't specifically banned by the school rules either?

RE: "implied rules"

My school would put "being within 100m of school technology" as mis-using school technology.

RE: "implied rules"

it's not mis-using it if they never even so much as told us not to use windows media player...if they don't want you to use something on the computer (which is there for your benefit) then they will block access to it.

Basically, he had no right to tell me to stop listening to music, but had I talked back about it then he would have sent me to the office for "insubordination" which is one of those blanket terms that people in power just absolutely love to use (like turn it off and on again)

RE: "implied rules"

Well...in your case, I would want to ask how loud your music was... but my gut says 'yes, it is but I don't believe it should be'.

If you'd been peeing in the classroom or taking a dump right there...I'd have gone with 'No, you can't do that.'

If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.

"implied rules"

I think that the teachers just hold the authority in this situation. It doesn't matter if he shouldn't have called you out on your music, he did anyway because he's in a position where he can.

RE: "implied rules"

my volume was set at 6...i could barely hear my music

Plague, I'm not here to start a revolution based around this idea or anything, I'm just wondering why I should get in trouble for something that was never discussed ever. (and I figure if I would have fought back then I would end up with a detention or something because "if your listening to music during school then you're not studying at all"~thought/meant by millions of school officials everywhere)

We all know that floating turds in public toilets can think of better things to say than school officials.
