RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: Why don't you like school?

Because it interferes with my freedom and somewhat my will to do things. If it wasn't school, I would actually try to be more social and go outside and things. I would try things like theather, have classes on guitar and follow my hobbies more. But I have to do homework and study for test and wake up early and all that. It just that I don't have the will to do anything interesting, because then I will have to forget about for some time to do school work and crap.

Ok, it might be not the most logical and have logical facts, it's a lot more personal. But that's how I feel about it. I hope you can understand.

Well, it's a government backed monopoly and it's also compulsory. That grinds my gears.

  1. Becuse we have to.
  2. The school claims to be democratic, when in reality, it is a fascist dictatorship.
  3. Just about everything is outlawed, including independant thought, free speech, civil and political rights, privacy and more.
  4. They say were not allowed to go to the toilet during lessons, but those bastards always have them locked when there is no lesson.

Why don't you like school?

You don't like it because you have to?

You HAVE to eat, but you still like doing that.
You HAVE to sleep, but you still like doing that.
And you HAVE to get an education, yet you DON'T like doing that.

No. Not the way it works.

Why don't you like school?

They're so controlling. Oh you didn't do this exactly the way I told you, right down to each tiny little detail? WELL YOU'RE WRONG. F's FOR YOU. NOW DO IT AGAIN THE RIGHT WAY.
They also encourage us to ask questions ("Even Einstein asked questions." "He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes. He who doesn't is a fool forever.") but then when you do ask a question, the teachers get angry. And they won't help me on my assignments because "Oh, you're gifted. You don't need help." If I didn't need help, I wouldn't ask for it. >8C

RE: Why don't you like school?

Because it got in the way of my education. That's it. I think it was because my reading age was above that of the class and I read quicker. I'd read something in the time alloted to scan and not be allowed to type up my answers until everyone had finshed looking at the words...and just pointless waiting in general really.

Riddle me this: If a home schooler can legally succesfully provide a full-time education in twelve hours a week, why does it take the school 30 hours a week to fail the same attempt? I don't accept that from businesses dealing with comptenent, why would I ever accept it from a school dealing with vulnerable children?

If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.

HeartOfTheNorth and Trekkie_Aspie, I really like your answers Biggrin

And if I were forced to eat by people, I would be grateful. Because its one hell of a lot better than NOT eating, just like its one HELL of a lot better to go to school rather than not learn anything at all.

RE: Why don't you like school?

Do we have to bring out the free ice-cream analogy? Please don't make me do that, Twisted. I think also whether you would be grateful would depend on what you're forced. If it's something like rice, then sure. If you were force-fed dirt on the other hand...

Why don't you like school?

You got a point, but it's still better than nothing.

I don't know if it's just me, but I'm the kind of person who is grateful for everything they have got.

Also the fact that I live in Canada, so our education system is much better than yours, no offence.

RE: Why don't you like school?

Twisted, not really. If you're being fed nothing, you're contending with the usual starvation issues. If what you're being force-fed is dirt, you're contending with the usual starvation issues and then dirt-borne diseases on top...probably parasites as well which will make the starvation issues worse.

You do know I'm English right, Twisted? I don't know if that makes a difference or not, just checking.

Also, I can be grateful for something and still acknowledge that it isn't perfect and try to improve it.

Why don't you like school?

History books blatantly lie and perpetuate euro-centrism and blind worship of the government.

We are never taught to think for ourselves, but instead to obey without question and without exercising our democratic rights.

Those who are not good at the specific brand of academics the school teaches oft consider themselves "dumb."

We forget most of it anyway, it is a waste of time.

We never learn to think critically and analyze and figure shit out for ourselves; which is something we would ALL take away.

Standardized tests are proven bullshit.

Congratulations humanity, because you refuse to let go of the old and evolve you actually make people believe in 2012. Not only that, but you're the only species on Earth that were able to make it possible, now we get to sit until we die because we couldn't get to Mars. Why don't you like school?

Learning isn't living?

Oh yeah, I forgot. This generations definition of "living" is sleeping in until 2:00 in the afternoon because they are hungover, then playing video games for 24 hours straight.

RE: Why don't you like school?

How many times? School =/= learning. Memorization =/= learning. Besides, living is learning - not the other way around. Even so, what's wrong with playing video games for 24 hours straight? Not that anyone's going to do that.

The teenager doesn't necessarily sleep in because they're hung over anyway - the teenager is biologically a night owl. I have a teetotaller friend who was a night owl at that stage (actually still is). Want to explain that to me? It certainly can't be because he was hung over.

Besides, as a species, we need maybe 8-10 hours of sleep regularly - when it is doesn't make that much difference.

So? Whether you like me or not has nothing to with whether I like(d) school or not. Nor does whether you want me to die or not. Nor does whether you want me to eat meat or not. Nor does it matter whether the feelings are mutual. We're not discussing that.
