RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Not telling kids about 'adult' things
Okay, I was wondering why we don't we tell kids about certain things? Like sex, drugs, etc.
Wouldn't informing them at an earlier age help?
This thought came across me when my younger sister asked me something about periods and whatnot. I pretty much told her what she wanted to know but my older brother happened to be in the room. He told me to shut-up, I asked him why and all he did was tell me "Because." And asking him why again got him even more angry.

Because people just don't want us to be smarter than our society says we should be in certain ways.
Congratulations humanity, because you refuse to let go of the old and evolve you actually make people believe in 2012. Not only that, but you're the only species on Earth that were able to make it possible, now we get to sit until we die because we couldn't get to Mars. We have failed as a society and don't deserve our gifts to survive for this long. Maybe this is why dinosaurs are extinct, we sure aren't any better than the dirt you say we're created from. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla...DvwSOFto#!

Age discrimination. People tend to assume that kids won't know what to do with all of that news.

BECAUSE THEY OBVIOUSLY AREN'T MATURE ENOUGH TO HANDLE SUCH KNOWLEDGE AND WILL FUCK EVERY KID THEY KNOW IF YOU TELL THEM WHAT SEX IS PLANTING SEEDS OF LUST IN TO THE MINDS OF INNOCENT YOUNG CHILDREN.
Who am I? Who are YOU?

Actually I think it's because the adults who are supposed to do the explaining don't want to talk about it because it's too awkward for them, and they'd prefer to just ignore it.

Because they're kids. let them be kids.
Don't make them be adults when they're not.

RE: Not telling kids about 'adult' things
I learned about sex when I was 4. My cousin taught me about and you could as far to say as she even molested me. *shrug*
Watched porn for the first time when I was 8 or 9.

Not telling kids about 'adult' things
While reasons for withholding this information may vary from family to family, but I think the main reason is merely being uncomfortable discussing the subject. Childhood is a very special and important part of a person's life, imagination is plentiful and everything is amazing, some parents want to keep their kids shielded from reality as long as possible, and honestly I don't blame them, reality can be cruel and unforgiving, and American culture can be odd at times, namely that sex and drugs are widely talked and joked about, yet both are condemned in the same manner.
Either way, the kids will learn about it from their peers eventually, but parents might prefer the concept be displayed to them first before filling in the details.

RE: Not telling kids about 'adult' things
Yeah, they probably want to keep the kids 'innocent' as long as possible. This is mainly because of people's warped and disturbed views on sex... Drugs on the other hand, well it depends on the drug.
And hey Amort, long time no see.
