RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Remember it's one freaking million dollars, you don't find that much? Seriously? Is military career compulsory?

I would have to work for around 25 years to earn a million dollars. A million may not be what it used to be but it would still allow me two decades of my current standard of living without having to subject myself to hell everyday.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

it's not compulsory, but it's what i choose to do with my life even though i realize that our government is just out to control the world, even though we let other countries have their little rulers.

and i know it's a million, but to quote Sean Parker "a million dollars isn't cool anymore, do you know what is? A billion" (sadly i actually remember quotes from the god awful social network after watching it while sick) so with only a million, i'll move and put it in bank accounts with great interest and let it pile up then go and pursue a career in the military. With a billion i would get a swiss bank account with awesome interest and then shove it in people's faces because how many people honestly have swiss bank accounts?

I'd definitely stay in college, but I wouldn't worry about my scholarship so I'd prolly let my grades slip and lose the thing. I'd invest the rest and save some of it. Buy a car. Get a pretty girl. Shit like that.

RE: If you suddenly were given a million dollars for something you've done...

Only a million eh?

Well, I'd end up with only like 400k of it to myself.

I'd give 200k to my mom, 200k to my dad, 200k for my siblings college / school / whatever they want it for to divide amongst themselves. Then with the 400 left over I'd put away 100k for retirement in a Roth retirement account just in case shit doesn't work out. That leaves me with 300k.

Quit my job, focus on my studies at college. I'd stop worrying about sticking to a computer science major because 300k should be enough to take my time in college and I already have 100k in a Roth account building up for retirement so I don't have to worry about that too much, so even with a mediocre job I'd be able to retire semi early in like 30-40 years. Maybe 20 years idk I haven't done the math.

With that in mind, I'd probably transfer to a University even though I'm only 1 year through community college, and start to take some political science and philosphy classes. Then I might take some remedial math courses even though I don't really need them, then I'd get back on track and slowly, very slowly work my way through all the shitty math courses I need for a computer science degree. (Up through calc II and shit.) Right now, since everyone in my family is essentially broke, I'll have to get through pre-calc, calc I, calc II and whatever shit math I need after that ASAP and work my ass off even though I suck at math. And I won't have the luxary of taking my time and trying out different stuff like philosophy and political science classes and shit.

Once I graduate if I have any left over I'll stick it in the bank and live off it until I get a job or w/e and then just live out my life as a normal ass non-millionaire dude.

Yh.

^Yeah I'd be nice and give my family some of it too, I just completely forgot about it. But you're way to generous man. I'd also prolly buy rental property (housing units, not business) because there's always Mexicans and stuff that need a place to live.

With a million dollars I would travel the world studying different animals in their environments on my own and build up a career as a biologist without even having a college education. In order to prevent my money from running low, I would invest in a very good DSLR camera and sell the better prints taken from all over the world.

No, I would:

- help my family pay off debt
- add some for me and my brother's college money
- go shopping
- add to savings
- buy something amazing for me
- buy something amazing for best friend
- buy something amazing for everyone
- go on awesome vacation

Seems reasonable.

RE: If you suddenly were given a million dollars for something you've done...

Million bucks isn't that much... I don't really think you'd be set for life. If I had a million and couldn't use it for anything but myself, I'd invest a bunch and set a bunch aside, then start a business of some sort to try to grow the investment. With just a million bucks, you could live really comfortably for a few years, or realatively modestly for a long time. But I doubt it'd really last you forever. Especially if you want nice things...

40 thousand dollars is about what they say is necessary for happiness. (Inflation may have changed this idk when the last time I checked up on this was.)

So basically, you'd get 25 years living on 40k which is a very basic amount of money. You couldn't afford too many luxaries or 25 years would go down to like 20, then 15, etc...

If you spent 100k a year, which a lot of upper class people do, you'd get like 10 years out of it. If you spent more...

One million dollars isn't going to make you set for life unless you grow it somehow. (Even collecting interest in a bank account can be considered "growing it". Although idk if that interest would be enough to keep you rich year after year... )

Seeimg as how Im out of school I would use it to create an alternative school. Where you learn how to do things like pay taxes, apply for bank loans and balance your checkbook. Learn things you will need every day, not things you might need someday.
