RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Do you intend to serve your country for 12 months.
Just wondering, trying to clarify if that would be a smart thing to finish or to just simply drop it. I mean it sounds kinda fun, wade through mud ponds, bushes and running through forests.
On the other side I don't really like fights, war and such military stuff so I also don't like spending my time that way. What are your thoughts on this? Has someone of you already served?

RE: Completing the military service, are you going to/have done it?

Where do you live? It would honestly depend on the country. I know you're not from the U.S. we don't have conscription other than the Selective Service System which drafts able bodied men during times of war.
I gave some thought to the Navy, submarines sound awesome but I'm not sure how I would handle being ordered around, and 4 years is a long time to put up with that if I end up not liking it.

The military isn't for everyone, that's for sure. I'd say it depends on each person's individual circumstances as to whether or not they should join the military. I personally wouldn't let patriotism/nationalism factor too much into the decision, because surely everyone that's doing something productive in society can claim to be helping it in some manner.

Personally, you couldn't get me to consider military service unless there was a legitimate threat to the American homeland, like an invasion. I'm just not cut out for it and my skill set lies elsewhere.

Wes said it.
That's really the only reason I would join up. I don't consider myself patriotic but I'd be willing to fight for my country if the U.S. was under attack.

Still I feel like employers would see me as a coward if I maybe don't do it. Maybe they'll think "Eyy, what a pussy, we ain't hiring him".

Brazil has a compulsory military draft when you are 18. It's for 1 year. My military time will be funny as hell. But there is a excess of contingency, so most get exempted.

Completing the military service, are you going to/have done it?

I live someplace crazy, but someplace special. I don't really know folks, I think I'll drop it, but in someway I feel like employers will think, "ooh he's mentally weak, can't withstand some physical stuff". I don't really like the military. Also it's a whole year which I feel is quite long for me.
