RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Trigonometry or Pre-Algebra?
So I've set up a couple of alternatives and please vote on multiple choices for the level of mathematics you think we actually practically need. What you think!Thumbsup

Arithmetic (including modular forms and simple variable algebra, not just +-*/) is the only truly necessary math, unless you have a job requiring something higher (most likely geometry).

Pre algebra and algebra, with a bit of algebra 2.
You might occasionally need some of it.

The basic stuff (addition/subtraction/division/multiplication) is the only thing anybody uses irl. My siblings forgot all about algebra and they're 24-31.

If this poll ever reaches 1000 votes, I'm gonna present this to my school principal/teacher. I agree that Algebra 1 is the absolute max which I feel is necessary to learn and comprehend, however school thinks that it will give me more choices if I become some kind of professor within quantum physics, but the thing is that if I ever become something even close to that I'll have to repeat and maybe even start everything over.

I voted for:
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
Pre-Algebra and Algebra
Geometry for the win!

Why? Because those are the only ones I remember anything about. And I even dabble in programming occasionally, so... if I don't need the other stuff, neither does 99.9999% of the population.

All the average person needs is basic arithmetic, as the others mentioned. I'm going to be learning more advanced forms of mathematics since I personally need them, but I know sure as hell that to most people it's just a waste of their god damned time.

I'll have to agree with Tsukarekitta, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division is pretty much all we need, though if you are planning to work at a job that requires further math skills and knowledge rather than this, then that will be a different situation of needy.

Most basic math, algrebra and a bit of geometry is all you need in real life, along with the other stuff you guys mentioned. The other advanced stuff you will only use if you need it for careers that use it a lot or personal choices.

Ok ok we actually NEED as much math as we can get to expand the knowledge of the human race. However, my brain only cares for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Biggrin I ARE GOOD AT MATHS

Hey, guys. As it turns out, calculus is actually kind of interesting. I've barely learned any of it, but what I have seen of it so far almost makes up for the five boring years of math I took prior to the beginning of this semester.

RE: How much math do you think we actually need? (Poll)

humanity obviously needs all the advanced math we have and more.

I'm taking Integral Calculus now, already took differential. It's pretty hard... but I like it in a way. But I do suffer because of it.

The average person doesn't really need precalculus or anything, but I guess learning math the right way helps you think. But schools suck at teaching it.

People are starting to vote for Calculus. Do we need that IRL if we don't have a job or activity related and requiring such a level of skill to that?

I'm sure calculus has a use. In any case, limits are pretty neat problem-solving skills.

But, honestly. There are so many objects created nowadays that have strange shapes that can actually be graphed and picked apart by calculus. Or, at least, that's what I've heard.

I am completely fine with knowing Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, if I need some type of solving techniques or something inside the Calculus topics and skills and stuff, then I'll learn it. But genereally speaking I find it quite useless for everyday use.

Yeah I think you're right, except on a really basic level calculus is actually pretty easy and explains things on the real world that might be useful once in a while. i.e. acceleration vs. speed vs. position of objects/cars/whatever, etc.

imo it wouldn't be that hard to teach some basic calculus principles earlier on.

It's not like most people need Algebra, either... it's just that I didn't suffer that much from taking it, personally. It was challenging, though.

I can't change my vote in favor of calculus or trigonometry. Those are both very fun and quite useful until you incorporate an unholy amount of algebra (at which point it becomes more like theoretical math).

Just reply here what you voted and then write what you vote now. It will be pulled out of the poll.
