RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Books vs. Movies

I have one great film fan . He watches all the premieres and more he likes comedy movies. I should say that he does not read anything at all. And if we are asked to read a certain book , he immediately sits down to look for her screen version.

I prefer to read a book and then watch the movie. In my opinion , the movie can not be so detailed to express what I wanted to convey the author of the work and the viewer, never read , the same , Jules Verne, is not able to behold the beauty and grandeur of his works. How do you think that is actually better to read the book , and then watch a movie or just go to the movies , and the book put into trash ?

Books vs. Movies

I prefer movies because they take less of my time and effort than reading an entire book.

Actually I'd prefer avoiding stories entirely because I'd rather make up my own, but maybe that's just me. Razz

RE: Books vs. Movies

I don't hate books, but when they get popular enough to make a movie I'd rather just watch the movie because that way there are less people going "Have you read The ****** Games yet?" that, and the books I do like are all about magic mostly (been working on finishing The Thirteen Hallows for about 2 years now, got distracted by things like the internet...fucking internet, i was halfway through too) and I like The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series

RE: Books vs. Movies

Depends. For the most part I can't get into film as a medium because I think about as fast as a baby snail and I like more extended narratives. Also the narrative itself often can be kind of trite because that isn't necessarily the ~point~ of a movie, but I can't get into that either.

But when it works, it works. Like, Rules of Attraction is a fabulous movie, and there's something that seems truer about it than the book. The whole thing is just completely vacuous, and the book conveys that too but somehow the first-person narration can make it border on stereotyped and sort of break the suspension-of-disbelief thing. On the other hand, and I guess I will leave this purposely vague to avoid spoiling anything, I feel like the whole Sean/Paul thing is handled in a much more interesting way in the book. (I think the movie's treatment of it is as much a concession to what The American Public will accept as an inherent limitation of a film adaptation, though.)

"Do we treat straight public sex differently than we do gay public sex? Of course. Straight people are so proud of their public sex that they named a cocktail after it."

There should be no contest. Books and movies should team up to entertain me.

i think i have an idea for expanding that...

when you go and buy a book, the first X number of pages will be either the book or the movie version of the book (the order doesn't really matter)

and when you go to a movie, they give you a free copy of the book (like they do with the "realD 3D glasses" now (i hate those things) and the books will either be just the book, or the book and movie...they will just be in a bin and somebody will just grab one without looking and hand them out.

The less you try to control things, the less you need to.

Books vs. Movies

I kinda like the Shadow Children Series. Although I'd like it if they made them into movies, I doubt they'd be very good.
To me, a book has all of the emotions, and feelings, and thoughts spread out. Once you read the book you can pretty much understand the hidden stuff in the movie that the book explains. Sometimes if a movie is poorly acted you just can't tell. If I had to choose, I'd choose the books, because there's a lot more, and you don't have to worry about being disappointed with the movie.
Plus, you can read the books over and over and sometimes not lose any interest. and most people catch some stuff that they forgot or missed, and that's what keeps the "spark" in the book. With a movie, it's always the same.

Books vs Movies.

Movies provide a much easier explanation on what's going on, but what books have is the amazing sense of detail and accuracy that movies often lack.

I like reading the book because I can visualize what the characters do. Also, you can tell what the character is thinking sometimes.
