RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Art is NOT art anymore...

So, for my junior year, I've decided to take a few art classes. I figured it would be a nice change and fun. It would be a break from the boredom.

Oh how was I wrong...

The good thing is, I'm not bored in art class. I'm either terrified or anxious.

I'm afraid of my bipolar art teacher. She threw my chair across the room because it SQUEAKED. She won't let you sing in class, even if you're good at it. She yells. If I said anything about it to some bigwig admin they would come into the class and watch. And then she'd act like a perfect little angel.

I'm also very anxious in the class because of the way it's graded. The grades are SO harsh. It's done so art isn't treated as an easy A. At one point, I had a D in crafts. It's frickin' crafts! What the hell?! A D? It's not like I wasn't working the whole class either. I do try. In fact, I've even cried a few times. There are certain "objectives" that you have to fufill to get points. So you can't really make your project how you want it to look. And our teacher also enjoys "fixing" things. In other words, doing things without your permission.

School sucks.

I once had an art teacher that had deep scars all over her arms.

But that besides the point. That's not an art class and your teacher's a fucking lunatic.

^ Yeah, I'd have to agree that's not a normal class you have there. Mine is fantastic, doesn't even feel like I'm in school. You should try and video your teacher's aggressive behavior or something and report her. Unless the school already knows... o_o

Lol @ throwing a chair. I've encountered teachers throwing temper tantrums and cursing when students don't obey them, but tossing a chair because of a squeak? Priceless. Got to love how our schools are changing so much. I think that's a sign telling us that their system is starting to give up.

She sounds a bit crazy... Cuckoo

Can you hide a camera somewhere and record her acting like a lunatic, then show that to some bigwig?

Yep... She's insane. Plus ever her "happy" face is kind of terrifying. It's almost as if it's hiding a churning volcano of rage and hatred. And about recording her... her "episodes" are usually short and they never last long enough to get out a camera and record.

Who'd take an art course in the year 2012? Today's idea of "art" is furry anime wolves that have Emo fringes, or photographs taken at mirrors with iPhones in them.

We live in a shit generation for art. I'd like to do art in the early 90's when grindcore got some mainstream attention here, and make album art for that. I can't draw for shit though.

Hell, if there was even a rumor of a student doing somthing like that, they'd be sending them to the nearest "alternative" school and therapist, after the assault charges of course.

The desperation is palpable, though.

I've seen so much shit done to youth and for some reason, this has made me angrier than I've felt in years. Abuse and oppression happens all over the world. It's a terrible reality of modern society, but we've all accepted that it happens and we're doing what we can to fight it and build a better world.
But this...this mindless, condescending disrespect toward people who have no legal voice with which to defend themselves, this reduction of parents' betrayal into a cheap crack about kids being computer-savvy...it's like watching a surgeon joke about life insurance while his patient bleeds to death on the operating table. The media's job is to protect society from oppression and they've drawn a clear line between the people worth protecting and the people that don't matter. How can they people sleep at night?

We had an assignment to pour plaster of Paris into a milk carton and sculpt something from the block. I added some red food coloring and the resultant block was pink. I made an Easter Island head because it was easier. I got a D.

I picked up the small statue and smashed it in his garbage can. I said, "give me an F instead."

It sounds like your teacher is a little nuts. These people can be dangerous and I would not suggest doing anything to unhinge her anymore. If she gets any worse, you may have to appeal to the school administration. If you can't record her outbursts, you might be able to get several students to sign a document of her behavior so that it is not just you saying something.

Last artistic thing I made was what the school calls a "bird feeder", but what I call a half eaten coconut with string taped to it.
