RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Should a friend change if there is something you dislike?

Should a friend change if you tell them something you don't really like about them? Which they do personally to you?
What are people opinions on this.
Aren't friends supposed to accept each other as is?

Argument ?= Aren't friends supposed to accept each other as is?
I do agree with you, but ""OTHER FRIENDS"" opinions are like that one right above the upcoming word.

RE: Should a friend change if there is something you dislike?

I was making a joke about Grease. I don't think a friend should change. Just because you don't like something about someone doesn't mean you should make them change. If you're truly their friend you'll be able to overlook it.
My best friends house is fucking disgusting because his mom is a hoarder but I put up with it because he's my friend. I'm sure there are things about me that annoy him.
That doesn't mean you can't point out their shortcomings as long as you're willing to be understanding, I know for a fact that my friend gets embarrassed as fuck about his house, but there really isn't much he can do about it. It would be entirely unfair of me to ask him to.

I wasn't thinking by such means, I meant. That if a friend does something which you dislike TOWARDS YOURSELF, THAT MEANS TOWARDS you and you two are friends, should the friend change for you, at least in your presence?
if the thing he or she does bothers you?

Should a friend change if there is something you dislike?

You and I are good friends in real life example:

Thought Criminal: Hey LiptomaticMate!
LiptomaticMate: Hi!
Thought Criminal: What's up?
LiptomaticMate: Nothing. Special.
Thought Criminal: (Another friend arrives)....So what you've been upto lately?
LiptomaticMate: (The friend is still arriving) ...........
Thought Criminal: .............. (Friend approaching) LiptomaticMate just stares around.
LiptomaticMate: Eyy, what you say?
ThoughCriminal: I said.....
DoA: Hey folks! What up?
ThoughtCriminal: Not much.
LiptomaticMate: Ditches you and somehow evades you.

While other times the conversation between Liptomatic and ThoughtCriminal can be good, but this kinda pisses him off. Or his rudeness for that matter? You want him to being rude that way and you two are friends.

If he's doing something specific TO you, and it bugs you, then he should stop if you ask him to. If it's just something in general that you don't like, then no, he shouldn't have to change for you.

If he's hurting you and won't stop when asked to, then yeah, I'd say he's not a real friend...

Should a friend change if there is something you dislike?

My mom once said, there aren't many real friends in this world. I wish she wasn't right? At least not in my city, and at least not within my acquaintances. This forum though seems to possess a couple of them Biggrin
What do you recommend for example? Doing with someone like that? Going in the same class and hanging around in the recesses, but still the person is a douche.

Don't hang out with them? I'd rather be alone than with people who disrespect me that much.

Thanks SoulRiser, what if that person freewillingly wants to be with you, but is an dumbass, and even approaches you without you asking ? What then?

I need a final approval. IS this correct?
Think of it, a dumbass approaches you freewillingly, and acts like and idiot towards you, and you tell him, but he constantly approaches and wants to be with you, but is a dumbass. WHAT DO I DO?

Lure him into a crowd, tell him you briefly have to use the restroom whilst in the middle of said crowd, leave him there, and don't come back.

Is he such a dumbass that he doesn't understand you don't want him around? There has to be some way to explain this to him. Use really simple words and talk veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slooooooooooooooooooooooooooowly....

Should a friend change if there is something you dislike?

The problem is graduallly starting to solve itself. I'm basically giving no shit to him, he is as he wants to be, but don't be towards me how I don't want you to be - towards me. So basically I don't hang around with him even when he approaches me kinda intrusively. Thanks, and talking to him has no point anymore because he simply thinks that friends have to accept each other how they are. Also he knows that both of us ahve the possibility of being right with our social philisophies. When this is true, the probability of one us knowing the correct social answer is 50/50.
I'll just avoid him.. bascially Smile
