RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Teachers say Khan Academy helps students learn too fast

Heard of Khan Academy? Some teachers say it helps students learn too fast, and they want to hold them back more. Seriously. I'm not making this up. Read this:

Quote:Even if Khan is truly liberating students to advance at their own pace, it’s not clear that the schools will be able to cope. The very concept of grade levels implies groups of students moving along together at an even pace. So what happens when, using Khan Academy, you wind up with a kid in fifth grade who has mastered high school trigonometry and physics—but is still functioning like a regular 10-year-old when it comes to writing, history, and social studies? Khan’s programmer, Ben Kamens, has heard from teachers who’ve seen Khan Academy presentations and loved the idea but wondered whether they could modify it “to stop students from becoming this advanced.”

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

Lol they mad

Srsly though I've used khan academy to learn me some trigonometry. If I were him I would laugh hysterically in front of a camera for 5 minutes then post the video on YouTube as video response to this bullshit.

Wow.... you see... schools are awesome because they force everyone into the same sized shoe! Advancing ahead??? BAH to that! Kids need to stay at the same pace with all subjects otherwise learning isn't good!

Because teachers hate it when kids call them out on mistakes.

RE: Teachers say Khan Academy helps students learn too fast

This reminds me of a post in a german newspaper.
Following is the summed up information I remember: A preschool teachress was so good that all the small children passed right onto "Gymnasim" (still the "highest" possible school in germany ). The ministery though something there must be wrong and she must manipulate something so that all could pass - they came to observe and just noticed she's a damn good teachress. However, she got forced to make all the test as hard as possible so pupils get worse and cannot attend to the Gymnasium and to sink the standards that where to high for all other teachers to hold up to it. Yes, instead of actually LEARNING FROM A DAMN TEACHRESS THAT TEACHERS INTERESSTING FOR ALMOST EVERYBODY, THEY FORCED THAT TEACHRESS SO BE "A BAD TEACHER". Sorry for the eye-cancer, but it really annoys me when I come to think of it.

I've seen so much shit done to youth and for some reason, this has made me angrier than I've felt in years. Abuse and oppression happens all over the world. If a 5th grade kid learns high school trigonometry and physics, that is amazing, he is probably interested in these subjects, the other subjects can wait, he'll learn them with time.

Screw those teachers, they're just trying to cover up their arses for being too slow.

RE: Teachers say Khan Academy helps students learn too fast

When I was in 4th grade, they sent the advanced kids off to play games for part of the day. You know, to try to hold them back, so they wouldn't be so freaking advanced next year. But it didn't work, most of the same kids were in the advanced classes in 5th grade also, and then they actually let us do advanced work.

I just lost all faith in all teachers everywhere. They cannot be saved.

its not a conspiracy as much as a trick.

tell people we want the kids to learn some important things, tell them we see that they know important things, and give them the task of being important wise people in the world of these kids.

the program when excecuted with all its benign dressings draws on the egos of the people involved. what is produced thereby is an ego factory. thats why when you challenge the idea of school to most, they react as if you are challenging THEM.

Purity is to Believe only that which deserves it.
Wisdom is to follow only the Opinion which makes the best use of evidence.
