RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The best way to rebel against school (in progress(

So.... a lot of people here don't like the quasi-prison that is school. The problem is that no one can really change the school system in major ways. So I have a few things that people can do to improve the situation.

1: Actually try and become good at what is taught in school.

^^ What is the point of doing this? Well, the time that you spend in school listening to teachers droning about things is not fun, but there is little else one can do (here in the US) besides deal with it. Why? One's performance in school impacts their future in a major way. Unless you are REALLY good at something and can easily get a job on merit alone, doing well in school is important. You rebelling and getting failing grades won't help fight the system in any way, and doesn't benefit anybody. It doesn't demonstrate anything of real value. Suppose the school has a rule that you cannot bring your own food into school. It is a valid protest to bring in food anyway, and this demonstrates a point and may help change that unjust rule. If you fail your classes, however, it will NOT CHANGE the school system anyway and you're just screwing yourself over.

Secondly, when you're in class, you can't really do anything besides paying attention to what is taught. It is not a good use of the time to do anything besides pay attention. Sure, you might be force fed shit you don't care about, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't learn it. Say you are learning US History, and you don't give a damn about it. That doesn't mean that knowing US History isn't important to being a citizen of this country. As someone (I don't know who) said, "Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it". Knowing history helps one understand things.

I know school is not close to the best way to learn things; I really hate it, and it makes me depressed, but there is nothing I can really do about it. Homeschooling, unschooling, and online schooling aren't options for me, and though you should consider them, they possibly aren't options for you to.

Doing well in school will make you a more intelligent person, simply because you are focusing on something and truly learning it. Intelligence is some parts creative problem solving, and in other parts knowledge. Imagine if someone knew no complex math and they had to weigh the benefits of a certain fiscal policy before voting on it. Even if they had a high IQ, they would find it DIFFICULT. People can express their intelligence in different ways, but it ultimately boils down to this.

(more to come, I'm sorry if this is tl;dr, I'm clarifying my position on school to myself by writing this)

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."-Albert Einstein Do I really have to keep spamming this quote? It's in my signature for crying out loud!

Congratulations humanity, because you refuse to let go of the old and evolve you actually make people believe in 2012. Not only that, but you're the only species on Earth that were able to make it possible, now we get to sit until we die because we couldn't get to Mars. We have failed as a society and don't deserve our gifts to survive for this long. Maybe this is why dinosaurs are extinct, we sure aren't any better than the dirt you say we're created from. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla...DvwSOFto#! Noo
