RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Where I'm at

So I've been changing for some time. Things that are different now:

1) I have stopped doing all illegal drugs, including alcohol and DXM (Cough Syrup). I still use drugs like caffeine, however.

2) I am attempting to improve myself by learning things and having an objective and understanding view of the world.

3) I am also attempting to learn new skills that will be useful (music theory, programming, etc.)

4) I am trying to improve my working memory and possibly cognition by doing dual n-back training. Here's a link: http://brainworkshop.sourceforge.net/

5) I'm attempting to act politely and nicely in social situations... this helps me have some credibility and interesting conversations with people that I'm looking for.

6) I'm trying to reduce time spent on the internet doing not-so worthwhile things.

7) I've accepted school, because I'm actually interested in what I have to learn there.

8) I'm using an application called Mnemosyne to learn things. Here's a link: http://www.mnemosyne-proj.org/

So there you go. I'm trying to change my life for the better and become a better person. I may still post here occasionally. I wish you all the best.

Regards,
Zagix

P. S.
An interesting website/blog is http://www.gwern.net/
The person who owns this website is very interested in improving his cognitive skills and is a programmer.

RE: Where I'm at

Zagix, it would be no stretch of reason to suggest that I am, at present, the last person here who actually presents a modicum of civility towards you. You simply cannot announce to everyone that you have changed and expect all past deeds to have gone and be forgotten; these things take time. Show everyone how much you've changed for the better and gradually they will come to accept you. It will take time, and is not instantaneous, most still see you as a troll. This is no guarantee; there are going to be some people here who will hate you even after you've changed, there is no use attempting to prove yourself to them and convince them individually. It is something you will have to accept. However, consolations at your behest that not everyone is like that, and as long as that's true, you still have something, your motivation for change, to strive for in your potential.

I'm only telling you this because if I don't, noone else will.

Hidden stuff:
TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.
