RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Might Be Going to Court For the First Time :|

I don't even know where to begin, but here goes...

Well guys, I'm just really against mainstream public school. I'm extremely against the system, and I have no one on my side and no one willing to help.

My mom (and I think my dad went, too) went to a meeting earlier today at my school with the Student Response Team about my excessive absences from the high school. I don't know much since I didn't want to talk to my mom about it--especially my dad--but I know a tidbit from my younger sister.

If I miss school this Thursday, Friday, and Monday (I believe), my parents and I will be required to go to court.

Also--because my mom has tried the best she could to force me to go to school, and because we're not financially stable--if I don't comply with what "they" say ("they" being the judge, I believe), my mother will lose custody of me ala power of our dipshit government and I will be placed in another home. My mom also has epilepsy (look it up if you don't know what it is) so that's another reason why.

My dad has recently returned from deployment from the Navy Reserves. He got a girlfriend, and both him and her decided to be stupid mammals and have unprotected sex, and now he's having a child out of wedlock. Furthermore, my dad told my mom a few days ago if I end up going to juvie or something, he will remove his child support or whatever for me and will discontinue supporting me (I guess it doesn't really matter now if I might be shipped off somewhere else).

I've really hated my dad a tad bit more than my mom, but now I hate them both equally. I've tried for almost 3 years (my sister longer) to convince them to try out homeschooling, and they just wouldn't have it. Right now my mom is telling me to go to sleep to go to school tomorrow for the GED pretest and stuff.

If I go back to school, I will be going to school but not in a regular classroom. I just hate the public school setting no matter where I'll be placed. At first I was a bit interested in the GED, but I just don't want to go to school and still comply with the system. I'm going to be alone (or with 2 or 3 kids maybe?), but I don't do most of my work. I have to wake up so fucking early, and at the end of the day I'm so exhausted that homework and unfinished classwork is the last thing on my mind.

I also failed 10th grade last year from excessive absences (luckily it was too late for the system to take action), and I just want to go homeschooling. My mom's emphasis on not doing homeschooling is because it's "taking the easy way out", and the reason kids are so defiant and messed up in this country is because the US let's the kids take the easy way out. I told her that sometimes taking the easiest way out is the best option.

Before I forget, my mom also told me I would get psychological evaluation (for the 2nd time...) because this isn't "normal". My "defiance" for not going to school and refusing to go is out of control. This is just fucking absurd. Fucking ridiculous. Even one of my aunts (who say she would help if she could) told me "I have to go to school 'just like everybody else'".

I also want to note that A) my parents' divorce is not the reason for my fuck ups B) I'm very intelligent to know what's wrong with me.

Right now my mom is telling me over and over to get off my sister's laptop and go to bed for school tomorrow. This past day I have been having suicidal thoughts because of how my life has not gotten any better.

In the case that I have to go to court, I just hope I get some legal counsel that one of my friends told me I could have, and another friend telling me I have to "start somewhere" and maybe sue the system for "emotional distress". I've tried my best to go against my parents and how public school is NOT good, but I think I've failed...

Gotta go. Be good to each other. :(

Note: Please read all of this! Biggrin

Sadhug
You didn't fuck up. At all. Your reaction to an insane situation is perfectly reasonable.

That said, do you think you'd prefer being taken away from your parents? I mean, I doubt they actually give you any choice in these things... (but if they do, I'll be happily surprised)... also, how old are you?

What's this GED stuff? Can't you just do that on your own at home? I thought that's how it's usually done... not in a classroom.

RE: Might Be Going to Court For the First Time :|

Agree with soulriser, might be better for you to get away from your mom. I had to go to court recently because my "mom" was abuseing me. I won the case and I live alone and she is in jail untill further notice. I found that dramatic stuff works well ifthe jury members are suckers. I also kept saying "imagine if your mother was doing all this to you. Howbwould you like that?". If you live somewhere that doesnt listen to the laws like where i live (I live in the highland park area of detroit) they might let you live alone. I got to and I am almost 14. But that is if you live somewhere real junky. Good luck, hipe it turns out as well for you as my court experience.

Might Be Going to Court For the First Time :|

I'm 16 years old. I live in Virginia.

The GED stuff requires me (from what I've been told) to go to school, see a special teacher and follow through a retarded procedure. I just refuse to go to school seeing the annoying inmates, seeing the wardens, being locked in a prison where I'm forced to bow down to the system. Going to school just makes me feel depressed and it's just outright ridiculous how I (probably not my parents) will be kidnapped, fined or punished in some other way if I don't bow down to the government and system.

My dad also went to the school again since I refused to go today. He accelerated the court date, and early tomorrow morning I will be headed to court and face the judge. I don't think there will be a jury, but I know I will be facing a judge. I have no idea what he's going to say, and I have no clue what I'm going to say and how I'm going to say it. I just wish I had someone defending me. I can actually be arrested for not going to court tomorrow. The cops will come, arrest me and "escort" me to the court--and I just find that completely absurd. It's like I being arrested for killing someone, raping someone or robbing tons of money from a bank.

If anyone has any advice for me--especially about going to court for "truancy"--please do post it. I just wish I had a way to attack the system and do something about this.

Ugh, I feel bad for you. And virginia is a nice place, so they follow the laws! Sadly, I have no advice but to try to suck up to the judge. Practice a fake cry. Or if you can, cry for real. Special teachers suck ass. Try for at least being in normal classes again. AVOID SPECIAL TEACHERS AT ALL COSTS! I have been shoveld into special classes and the teaxhers even follow me into the bathroom and stand right outside the stall door!!!!!!!

Well I don't think he's a girl so crying won't work at all. Maybe if you just honestly explain why you have been missing school right after you think of your excuses you will be let go. I'm probably the youngest one here but I do know a few things that might help you and some others.

Maybe say sorry and beg them to forgive you and promise to go to school is there is no special ed, to at least get out of the worst of it. Or if you are bad at lieing, yack on and on about how special ed will make you hate it even more. Sorry to say, but getting out of the special ed seems like all you can do at this point. :(

No. Don't roll over on your belly - you have already fallen so far that it is important that you stand firm against this gross injustice. Find someone who will listen to you (your best bet is the local media, if they're out of news stories Razz).

Look for slow news days. I'm sure that couldn't hurt. And make sure that you don't lie. It's illegal and helps no one. Just tell the truth, and let the judge decide for him/herself.

I'm back with my name changed for the 5-7th time and more serious and depressed than ever. If you're not 16 I suggest helping people join you and getting some guns on you quick. There is nothing you can do if you're not 16-18 so you might as well prepare for the worst that is inevitable.

RE: Might Be Going to Court For the First Time :|

Alright, again I return, peeps.

Yesterday, the court meeting was nothing than a mere "scare". I'll elaborate.

After finishing school, being very tired (and with an extreme headache as an added bonus), my parents came to pick my sister and I up from school. My mom might have lied about going to court earlier in the morning because I was forced to stay in school once I was dropped off with my sister. My sister set off to her 1st class, but I set off to the counselor's office when I was there when I was with my parents.

Yes, my mom woke me up early and lied to me saying I was going to court. I got ready, was shaking a bit (still at the ready), and was hoping for the best. Yet as we were approaching the school, I had a feeling I was going to be left at school.

Rolling back onto the morning, once I was at the counselor's office my mom asked my counselor what was going to happen to me today and if I had to appear at court. She told my parents I was going to stay in school today, take the GED pretest (as it was planned by the "Student Response Team"), and after the pretest, return to class and cope with the anxiety I had for the rest of the following day and what it entailed. The counselor greeted me after my parents left, and held the door for me while she escorted me to the room to take the pretest but understandably, in anger and frustration, I ignored her and could say was rude (yes, I'll admit that).

I didn't have to go to my first block Geometry after the test, as the teacher told me I could stay in the class and not have to deal with the craziness going to my 1A class. The whole day was extremely boring and brought back so many feelings of why I hated public school, the environment and how it delivered the education, but I had to cope with it. What helped me cope with it--friends that were in my Lunch/Study Block class, others I've talked to for the two years I was there surprised I was back and why I was (a little lying was involved because I didn't deserve being put through the explanations of "why?"), and my best friend's sister who was in 2 of my classes.

Flashing back to the end of the day, I felt like utter shit. After I got in the car, my mom gave the front-passenger seat over to my little sister so I was forced to sit with my mom. My dad was trying to ask if I wanted some food but I ignored him. My mom was telling him how I wasn't going to talk to him and after a few minutes, she asked me how my day at school was but I kept ignoring her, and she told me how she was asking me a question but I told her I wasn't going to give her the satisfaction.

So arriving at the courthouse, I thought I was going to face a judge and other people there representing the system. We were waiting in a room, and my parents noticed a poster for military school called ChalleNGe. Now I'm freaked because I'm a minor, and they can't force me to go but today my mom told me how the courts will. My mom said over-the-phone to a cop from the non-emergency number that she's considering this and will ask my supervisor on Monday. Luckily I found this, but I'm worried about how I'm minor and what will happen that the courts will force to go to a "legit" military school my parents find, and how I will need someone or a group of people defending me so I don't have to go.

Going back to the waiting room, the lady came out and called me and my parents. This meeting was going to be private so my sister had to be in the waiting room, although I happened to tell her just about everything. Everything started and my parents were talking to her and telling her how a "Student Response Team" (aka "Student Support Team") was set, and how the GED plan was set but how I wasn't going to school until that day. She asked me in what grade I was in, and I told her, "In 10th... again." Then she asked me: "Why I wasn't going to school?" I looked down, in sadness, and she asked my parents to leave. A few seconds after, I broke down, and this is an emotion I've never done in a long, long time.

I told her, how the system was screwed, and how I hated school. Everything about it I was against, and just how the school had a factory-esque environment. I told her how I wanted homeschooling, but how my parents were extremely against the idea with my dad having no legitimate reason and my mom telling me that "it's taking the easy way out". I was there vulnerable, and she told me how the only little thing preventing me from going against the system is the government. She was just telling me how I would have to get into law or something and just if GED was an option, and I told her it was. She told me she wasn't a psychologist or anything, but she noticed I was extremely overwhelmed and depressed, and how I needed to try looking for a psychologist again. I'm totally against the psychologist idea, but she was pushing for it and gave some info to my parents. She also stated how I needed a balance between video games and everything else, so I can't be inside the house all the time and just need to do different things to show my parents. I couldn't elaborate about how I'm an introverted person, and the internet and video games are pretty much my life. The main thing she told me though: That she just wants me to succeed. Any and all slight remarks my parents and I made to each other was something she didn't jump in on. She was a moderator, but to a degree.

She let me know if I didn't comply, several other steps would be taken until I'd face a judge. I had no other choice, but from what I've been told about how GED works out, I'll have to submit to it and will be able to deal with it. I plan to finish as fast as I can, do the best I can and then move out so I can get away from my parents. It was the balance that my parents and I can agree on, because the other option (homeschooling) was completely out of the question if we had reached this point in my life.

RE: Might Be Going to Court For the First Time :|

So today, I broke down... again.

I was in my mom's room accompanying my sister, and she turned on the TV and I was there using her laptop and watching TV. Both these things are things I'm restricted on, although my TV in my room was disconnected and it was never reiterated about how "I could never watch TV", or "Whatever my mom was watching in the living room was something I had to watch". Maybe I'm just being a smartass, but hey, it's viable.

My mom was telling me to get out of her (and my sister's) room for about an hour, until she called the non-emergency number and she spoke to that cop and explaining how I'm disrespecting her and my dad and how that military school is an interest for her--something which can't be since that military school I mentioned has to be something the student wants, not the parent. Now I'm just scared what will happen these next couple of weeks if I am forced into a "legit" military school.

I finally decided to hide my DS in an area no one would ever know, get out of my sister's room and go to the living room. My mom constantly yelled at me and continued the fight about me changing the channel and turning off the TV. She ended up trying to hit me in the knee with the controller, and tried hitting me with her shoe to get me away from the TV--she even got me a few times. My sister got in her way, and I got my sister's cellphone while my mom attempted to stop me and I called 911. I filed for assault, and then the disappointment followed.

The cop came, my mom answered the door, and she explained her side of the story. The cop was allowed in, and had a talk with me. A talk completely turned a lecture, and one-sided conversation about public school and how I needed to stop treating my parents like assholes and pull myself together. He judged me based on my room--which is pretty messed up--but I told him that wasn't my fault. He didn't even focus on why I called, and I called because my mom fucking HIT me.

I kept pestering my mom by turning off the TV and changing the channel in the living room since she kicked me out of her room and disconnected the TV, and she got to mad at me she tried hitting me with the controller in the leg and tried hitting me in several placed with her shoe. Luckily, my sister was in the middle of it to kind of back her off so I could make my escape, and that's when I called 911.

So the cop said that I needed some psychological help for not going to school, and he was putting down the GED idea (I've already decided to go along with it if you didn't know at this point). This cop was a complete ass--and not because he didn't agree with me--but because he didn't even address the issue on why I called. My mom answered the door first, and they were so friendly to each other and he told her how I might need to see a doctor because of missing school so much and having anxiety, hating it so much, etc. It was clear this guy was defending the system and took advantage of me being a minor--and he even told me I had NO rights. He said that, and I'll never forget it.

After he left, my mom was left with a smile on her face and I yelled at her. She told me I was just mad because the cop didn't side with me, but I clarified that it was way more than that, and that the school system was screwed from the roots it grew from. So then I left to my sister's room, and I cried my heart out again. I cried so much, but luckily my sister was there and has sneaked her laptop to me and has been so supportive.

Lastly--what I plan to do is report my mom trying to assault me to the supervisor of the court, and send an email to the local news so my voice can be heard. I also plan to make a blog called The Kid Who Hates School. Once I get all my tech back, I will share my story, have a roundtable with other peeps about our stories and talk about education reform plans, and I plan to all-out attack the public school system on my blog. Furthermore, I think I've decided to take advantage of the government's power and pursue law to make some overdue educational reform. Though we don't know if public schools in France will be "greener" with no homework, I think that's something that we've needed a long time here in America.

Thank you all for reading through all my rants (and crap /sadface) about all this, and I hope to receive continued support in the future. I will also be sure to move out when I get the chance asap. Wink

Might Be Going to Court For the First Time :|

Since this is the only website where I actually bother to read essays of text, I can say as usual that the government is your biggest issue. I think for middle schoolers it's while for high schoolers it's the government as it seems. Make sure to tell your personal story, and make sure everything you say goes with the law so they won't have anything to fight back with.

Congratulations humanity, because you refuse to let go of the old and evolve you actually make people believe in 2012. Not only that, but you're the only species on Earth that were able to make it possible, now we get to sit until we die because we couldn't get to Mars. We have failed as a society and don't deserve our gifts to survive for this long. Maybe this is why dinosaurs are extinct, we sure aren't any better than the dirt you say we're created from. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla...DvwSOFto#! Noo

Hug

Your mother is a bitch. Sorry, I had to say that.

Do whatever you can legally do to get the hell away from them ASAP...

And run like hell if there's a chance they'll send you to one of those "military schools". I don't know which of them are like this, but just to be safe, avoid all of them.

Another case of adults not quite seeing the whole picture here. As usual, they just seem to ignore children as they are "stupid" and "immature". Sigh. When will they learn? And good going. Finally, we have a true rebel. Someone who goes completely against the system, and fights to get it the right way!

You go to a school corporation building, pay ~$70 and take 5 tests. You can take them through a course of a few days if you so wish. I passed and got my GED so I would know.

Homocidal: use this http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/4510127/H...D_Test_PDF I did and I passed. If you don't know how to pirate, then just ask.

I got a 579 as my score.

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

Might Be Going to Court For the First Time :|

You're stronger than me on this one. I would let my parents take away my phone, ps3, etc, for not going to school. I would go to court. I would put my middle finger in the faces of all of those, especially arrogant adults similar to my dad's girlfriend, that preach to me about how I'm lazy and stupid. But I really couldn't handle being taken away from my family and taken to a different home.

Well, I meant the studying for it part. I know the tests are taken in a specific school-ish place.

Bob, stop thinking about things to much. The truth of the world shall never be revealed, for not many can handle the truth. In the mean time, rejoice in the knowledge of it and that they're are others who like you in the world.
