RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Jobs shouldn't require school.

What is the job you want that shouldn't, wouldn't, or couldn't need to have to go to school for. I'm in a look for that one job mood again. I want to be that job that involves therapy but a type of therapy. I'm gonna be a rebellious therapist!MwahahaGoingcrazyGiggle

Jobs shouldn't require school.

I want to spend my life searching for the Mokele-mbembe in the jungles of central Africa. That is my dream job. I need only money and a camera for that. Will I ever do it? Yeah, probably not.

I don't think you should have to go to school for a job. College, yes. School, no.

Jobs shouldn't require school.

I'll protect the streets of my city at night and apprehend those who prey on the weak. I will pelt drug dealers with water balloons and fire Nerf water guns at muggers. While a murderer might have a knife, I'll have a pool noodle (which has superior reaching distance). Armed with a large supply of water-related items and clad in my best swimsuit, I will become SuperHydroHeroGuyPerson.

I'mma go out on a limb and say the field of writing that I want to pursue doesn't need not nearly as much schooling as other intensive fields (Like the STEM fields) require.

You could probably learn English, grammar, punctuation and penmanship (and/or typing skills) at home,a tutuor or at some library.

English belongs to English people. I'm going to learn Native American. It's not the only language.

They should just make a bunch of aptitude tests for different professions, so you could demonstrate the skills required without going through school, or have centres set up for the "grey" professions, anything with stuff that can't be measured by a test, like teaching ability

i watched a movie once where there was this city powered by what seemed to be steam and when the kids got old enough, there was this big ceremony where they got the job that they would do for the rest of their life, the way they were chosen was via pieces of paper in a hat...one of the 2 main characters wanted to be a messenger bc she liked to run, she got something else...then found her friend got to be a messenger and they traded (which is against the rules i guess)...it was a pretty good movie, and i think that system would work, but we should have 3-5 different levels of jobs instead of just "for life" (like we can start when we turn 12 then after X number of years we get a chance for a different job via the hat thing and so on)

What movie was that? That sounds almost like The Giver, and is a terrible idea because we would have no choice in what job we want.

I can't remember the name of the movie, but I know it wasn't The Giver just from knowing that the reason everything was steam-powered was because the city was underground because on the surface there was a war(?) and so to get the kids away they went below, and like in Wall-e, they have this box that they were supposed to open at a certain time, except over time they forgot about it, and then someone didn't want them to go back. If anyone finds out what this movie is called, let us know!

SoulRiser, can you tell MentalAnarchist what the 50 shades of grey is like?

SWEET BABY JESUS, IT'S CALLED THE CITY OF EMBER AND IT WAS A BOOK TURNED INTO A MOVIE!!! once again, the almighty Google has not let me down...time to go watch it again.

Personally, I think that if a person is well-qualified for a certain job but is missing some type of certification, there should be an open "on the job certification" which requires less time for you to complete than taking/being sent to to a college-based program (and costs less, too).

Holy shit I read the book AND saw the movie, yet I couldn't remember.
I guess because the jobs was such a minor plot piece.

Jobs shouldn't require school.

I remember reading City of Ember. It was humorous watching you guys try to figure it out.

aren't you supposed to help people when they have a problem?

RE: Jobs shouldn't require school.

Generally speaking, it's quite the new development in society that ones education constitutes their eligibility to perform a task. In history, the workforce tended to use a journeyman system, where an apprenticeship would lead to that persons future career.

In someways this system is more free, in other ways it is less free. I don't see any reason though that the old methods of training should be forgone. You should really have a choice between apprenticeship and schooling.
