RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I'm back, I guess

After having my life change considerably (which involves not being in public school) and drifting away from this forum for a while, I decided to come back. Glad to see the place is still alive and kicking! Hopefully I can get some answers here (or at least a good time); despite all I've learned in the interim there are still some things that trouble me (howe 2 be teenagerd part 16 teh reutrn of wwwwwwwwwwww). At the very least, I'll make sure not to forget the troubles of youth.

Hello.

You missed a hell of a lot. The site was down twice and the latter sent most of the old members away.

You can read about that here: http://www.school-survival.net/blog/p/ss...otice/3961

Previously known as Derchin.

It was a number of years ago. I was suffering pretty badly in school, so my parents pulled me out and we prepared for homeschooling. Unfortunately, some events happened that got in the way of this; and if I may say so myself it changed me as a person. Right now I'm biding my time and aiming for a GED, and college after that. I haven't gone back to school, since it would be quite a strain on my family (not to mention myself) right now and I really don't want to waste any more time there anyway (i'm sure you should know why).

Welcome back! Remember me?

I earned my GED and I'm in college now.

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

Actually pretty fun. Homework's a little slim, not that I'm complaining. Doesn't really feel like I'm learning much, however. But maybe it'll pick up. Also I'm transferring the nearest chance i get.

I'd like to go to college myself sometime in my future; hopefully it'll happen. And may I ask why you're transferring (dorms or colleges)?

I'm back, I guess

Apologies for supreme necro bumping, but I didn't feel like making a new thread. It's been a while, but I feel I'm finally making progress. I've been feeling more confident, looking into colleges in my area and hopefully being able to start on a GED pretty soon. I'm also hoping to find a job sooner or later, but that's just hope. (We moved from the coast to a smaller inland town, near a city we used to live in.) My family's acting like a bunch of fucktards as usual and while they really piss me off sometimes, they can prove helpful at other times (my mother's been trying to help me with the GED but that's hit-and-miss). 'Course I should probably pass Driver's Ed first, get my permit and find a decent truck first... I've learned more about the world and some of its troubles recently, and after struggling through lots of bullshit (long story, believe me) since about late 2009 or so, things are looking up; I feel better and ready to start taking on the responsibility of Growing Up™. And I might even be losing weight! I'm just trying to take it easy for now and work towards what needs to be done, slowly but steadily(ish).

We tell everyone that I'm homeschooled, and my little brother is currently being taught basic skills that way (but it's not going very well since my parents are assholes to put it bluntly), but I think a more accurate description is that I'm being unschooled. Luckily for me, I've realized my responsibilities and duties when it comes to my future. (And if my brother has to go to public school I might have to go back too; he's been through enough even if he can be real annoying, and I don't want to see him suffering alone.) While I've been occupied a lot lately, sometimes my thoughts turn (somewhat involuntarily, I may or may not be unhinged from the past couple years yes it was sort of that bad) to my old school days, and consequently SS. I haven't forgotten the problem of public education (or maybe it's still working *just fine* as Gatto said), or about you guys (even if I don't post here and I'll probably post infrequently since I still don't have reliable internet access), or about the old school friends that I'm trying to get back in contact with. The friends in question are on the honor roll at the high school I might have went to as well had I not decided to drop out, and had life suddenly decided to take me on a rollercoaster that while painful as all hell, helped me find who I am and what I might want to do. I'm trying to find an e-mail address to contact them with; hope they don't (still) hate me...

I'm doing okay, and I hope you are too after reading all of that.

Actually there's been a bit of that going on, but it's a long story and hopefully over by now. It should be; I beat Deus Ex a couple months ago. As for my life...it's kinda similar.

Let's just say that I've learned a lot, not just regarding who I am as a person and what my role in society is (and could be), but about humanity as a whole. And we're some pretty magnificent bastards. I also learned a number of interesting things (keyword interesting), and I dare say I am generally more intelligent and (slightly) less impulsive than I used to be posting on here, if not simply a different person. I think.

That's a good sign. Always doubt what you think you know. Wink Good to see you back on SS Trar. Do you plan on attending a community college in the upcoming years, or do you have something else in mind for your education in the future?

Deus Ex the original, as in the first Deus Ex with JC Denton and MJ12/UN(and zeitgeist)? I love that game...

Fill out a FAFSA. I did a couple months ago and basically I'm eligible for enough in aid to get me through community college, but not through the four year college after I transfer. I'm just gonna figure that out later. Worst case scenario I have border-line rich relatives to turn to.
