RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

Telling bullies that they are the scourge of society might make you feel ten feet tall, but it seriously hurts their self-esteem and makes you look like a jerk.

I have an interesting little idea. How about we stop those obnoxious, aggressive haters from victimizing bullies? The horrible laws passed in nearly every state are utterly ridiculous, hinder the rights of students, and limit much-needed conflict and adversity!

I was the occasional victim of bullying several years ago, but I didn't need help, especially help that sprang up too long after-the-fact. Heck, the insecure, innocent young tormentors are far less threatening and antagonizing than their self-righteous, unrelenting foes.

Bullies should stand up for themselves. Don't let the "protectors" win!

RE: The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

Bullies mostly bully people to make themselves feel better because their parents treat them like dirt or something. So yeah, telling them they're horrible doesn't really make anything better.

On the other hand, standing up for the people being bullied is still a good idea. The ones who don't stand up for themselves probably feel on some level like the stuff bullies say about them is true, or they just don't think they have the power to do anything about it.

I was bullied for like 8 years... told a teacher once, they just made me look like an ass in front of the entire class, and the bullies were even meaner to me after that. What did I learn? Nobody cares. Nobody can be trusted or relied upon if I have problems. At some point I swore that if I ever come across someone else being bullied or picked on I would stand up for them or at least try to be their friend (which was horribly difficult for me since I was the most insanely shy person evar... which was actually because of being bullied, it made me scared of people). Kind of partly the reason I started SS in the first place, even though it isn't really about being bullied. I just have this thing for sticking up for anyone who is kind of like an underdog or whatever.

So... yeah... as far as bullies go, it's probably their parents' fault they do what they do. Good luck explaining it to them... Noo

RE: The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

Sort-of-off-topic: Don't go around telling the teachers that a kid is being bullied unless it's getting violent. I was being bullied in 6th grade once and this other kid saw and told the teacher. The bully thought that I had snitched on him and got really mad.

The only reason anyone has a bully problem is that they are a weak cunt if you punch that nigger in his or her mouth they won't fuck with you, even if you lose they don't want to get punched in the mouth again.

RE: The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

I sort of spawned this idea half-joking, half-serious... but I'm getting the impression that some sick freak was thinking the same way when they decided to create an all-encompassing "stop bullying" project.

Attempting to get help from an adult is what "they" want victims to do. There are many different methods of getting rid of bullies without making the bullies subject to a fate worse than, well, being bullied. The most common, and arguably helpful, technique is to simply "ignore" (stand passively, observe, and file away for later when such information might hurt) them, like you might each and every wrong of the school system. If you're more assertive or even aggressive, there are other solutions that also work, depending on how effective your traits are and the sort of person you're dealing with.

Unfortunately, bullies have little to no protection from their tormentors. Ignoring laws tends to get one in more trouble than following them.

But these stupid anti-bullying laws have inspired even more terrible (though similar) laws, such as anti-trolling laws (which take away freedom on the Internet). It's time people see that the only monsters are the ones that fight needy and socially-backward people as monsters.

RE: The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

Yeah, while fighting them might make them stop (whether it actually does is debateable), it isn't going to solve whatever is making them feel a need to bully people in the first place.

Quite right, and it only seems to attract teacher/administrator attention - not helpful.

Scratchchin Perhaps those anti-bullies should stop being so harsh and start addressing problems in the lives of bullies. There has to be a reason that bullies act all passive-aggressive and have low self-esteem and whatnot. They might have trouble at home or something.

In any case, victims aren't the only victims anymore.

RE: The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

They never were the only victims... in fact, they weren't even the first. I suspect this bullying phenomenon is actually a long line of verbal/psychological abuse (maybe even "mild" enough to not make anyone bother) that has been passed from parent to child for a long time. And being forced together in a prison-like building just kinda brings out the worst in people, too.

Getting help or whining to a teacher doesn't solve shit. In school, violence solves everything. It actually does and anyone who says it doesn't is a fucking retard.

RE: The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

I had several bullies throughout my life. None of them bullied me for long. SV is right. I haven't won every fight I've been in with a bully, but every time the problem was solved. Sometimes just daring him/her to punch you is enough.

Fuck bullies, I wish I could go back and smash their motherfucking faces when they started pulling their shit on me instead of dealing with these idiots for the next months.

But yeah, every bully gets some of his own comeuppance. One of mine broke his leg.

Punching someone is so much more effective then giving a bully years of counseling to overcome mommy and daddy issues. Teachers are mostly to stupid to deal with bullies anyway, as are parents and most psychologists.

RE: The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

Bullies are confident, at least to the extent that they feel that they have the right to put others down. Somebody who is insecure but lacks this confidence isn't going to bully anybody. They think that they're better than the kids being bullied, and they want everybody else to think so too. Bullying is a method for these kids to try and one-up each-other in the eyes of their peers. So if it is instilled in children that bullying becomes completely intolerable, it will cease, because no longer can the bully gain a social advantage if everybody looks down on him for his actions.

Simply telling kids to report bullying to the teacher does nothing to solve the problem. This gives the bully more ammunition against the person reporting him, using the fact that he snitched on him as a tool to socially isolate the kid being bullied. After all, who wants to hang out with a kid who will get you in trouble if you break a rule? For this reason, the only way to stop a bully in action and maintain the respect of peers is to fight him. Nobody wants to mess with somebody who punches him in the jaw every time he does. Schools maintain a policy that fights are not acceptable, but I see them as necessary to maintain a bully-free environment. In middle school I faced suspension frequently just for defending myself in fights. Is this really fair? Am I supposed to curl up in to the fetal position when somebody strikes me? No. Any sane person would lash back out at his attacker.

Who am I? Who are YOU?

Yeah, this is true. But schools don't give a shit enough to treat the underlying cause because it does not effect the "learning environment" and is out of their i-have-to-give-a-shit-about-this range.

Most kids that were bullies to me in school ended up liking me, which is kind of weird, and the rest I just never saw.

The Anti-Anti-Bullying Movement

Recently, on the news, the liberalmediafags were praising this chick who wrote a song condemning bullying and acted as though she'd slain hundreds of enemy combatants. Chances are she's been laughed at and picked on for writing that malarkey...well, at least I hope so, or else bullies have become too helpless.
